Business Administration Major Questions

I seem to find a lot of threads regarding this topic. I'm starting this as kind of a Q&A type thing to try to help out as many people as I can since I've been through the process and I understand it's confusing. I'll check back as often as I can and I've done quite a bit of research on this major.

I'm a first year Business Administration major with sophomore standing. I was just accepted last year so I'm pretty up to date with what has been going on. I'm involved in several business clubs so I'll try to answer any questions you have regarding those as well.

I’m pretty worried about being accepted into the Business Administration Major ): I had no idea it was competitive! I guess I’ll be getting into my second major? How many students get accepted into the BA major?

What were your stats?

These were my stats:

As you can see, I had a pretty low GPA coming in. Actually, it’s still not much better now. I can’t remember the exact number but I think the woman at orientation said there were around 90 of us for the class of 2015. I don’t know how many students applied. I didn’t put down an alternate major because I wasn’t even aware that the major was hard to get into (I didn’t do my research well at the time). I’ve heard unconfirmed sources that say they accept 150 students out of 4200, but like I said it’s unconfirmed.

Don’t be discouraged from the stats that the colleges throw at you. For example, they say that the average GPA for freshman is around a 4.0 but that’s for all applicants including those who see UCI as a safety school. Although there were people that had around that GPA, I also have many friends that had around a 3.5 and are still attending here.

This gives the stats for tthe ENROLLED students of majors and schools last year so one can give a more realistic comparison

Thanks for posting the link to the stats…very comprehensive and interesting.

Hey, I was recently admitted as a freshman undergrad to the Business Admin Major. I have so much I want to ask about the major and the Paul Merage School of Business in General. What courses are you taking your freshman year? Are the courses competitive, meaning do the students fight for the top grades or is the competitiveness almost non-existence? How do you like it? What are the class sizes like? Do you take courses outside of Paul Merage? What about being in Paul Merage that makes the education “interdisciplinary”? Is it easy to find internships during the summer or even during the school year? Who are the main recruiters? I am looking maybe to become a consultant in any of the Big 4 firms so any advice on that? Thanks so much in advance.

My stats:
SAT: 1880
UC GPA: 4.45
Unweighted GPA: 3.95
Extracurricular: Student leadership, advocacy groups, community service, internship at Ernst and Young

Hope you don’t mind me chiming in, cacophonous.

But to BayYouth,

I transferred to BusAdmin from BusEcon as a JR, but I took/taking all the classes that the BusAdmin’s take.

From what I can remember… freshmen take some econ courses, calculus, stats, if you haven’t yet, financial accounting, and etc.

MGMT courses are viewed as a bit easy, as often the courses are taught by lecturers who are working in the field- and they don’t care about grades as much as professors do.

However, you will have to study your butt off for courses here and there.

Class sizes differ by dept, (e.g. econ courses can be up to 400 students, while MGMT classes can range from 20-200, depends on if its a lower-upper div. class as well, typically around 80 in the upper div level).

Internships shouldn’t be too hard to find if as long as you’re actively looking, and are part of clubs & etc.

Main recruiters, as in… which firms/companies recruit here? Well if you’re going big4…

I don’t know too much about big4 consulting, isn’t it only Deloitte who hasn’t gotten rid of their consulting practice? Unless you’re talking about tax consulting…

Nonetheless, the big 4 (besides EY) recruit pretty heavily here. Mostly for audit & tax.

And having an intership at EY as a HS student should definitely give you a leg-up.

How is the job outlook for business majors?

Do you think they adequately prepare you to work?

Oh, and also, are the classes difficult to get into?

How do you like your major, classes, environment, professors?
How hard it is to get good grades there?
How long you spend on your homework?
How is housing? I assume you live on campus right?
I heard it is a small suburban area and people commute on weekends, is this true?
How’s your college life? boring or fun?
