Business at Emory

What are the pluses of studying business at Emory. Particularly accounting. I'm in TX so I have to option of UT's 5 year Masters of Public Accounting Program. Is it worth it?

Also, hows the job market for internships in Atlanta?

General rule for accounting is it is the same no matter where you take since most states have regulations for CPA sitting. This means you take the same accounting classes no matter the school. If you just getting a masters so you can take the CPA exam Emory offers a CPA degree that basically gives you enough accounting credit to sit for the exam in 4 years. The only difference between the two would be cost and location. Both are good programs.

And the job market in Atl is pretty good. I had a few business offers even though I am not a business major.

Yea with most you take the CPA after you graduate. So you don’t have to have a MPA then right?

Thats correct. Just need the credit hours that is all.

Questions:

How competitive is admissions into Goizueta as a sophomore? Is it similar to UMich-Ross’ competitiveness? What pre-requisites need to be fulfilled?

If I were graduate from Goizueta as an undergraduate, how hard would it be for me to find job opportunities outside of the south (Northeast, Wall Street, International)? What is the value of an Emory BBa Degree? Would it be recommended to go to graduate school if I wanted to work in places beyond Atlanta?

When I got in, the “bar” was set at around 3.4 gpa. If you were above that and did reasonably well in the prerequisite classes then you were in. Below that, you needed to do very well in the pre-reqs and have good recommendations. With that said, I had friends get in with 3.0 GPA’s and some B’s in pre-reqs (2 years ago).

This is going to vary significantly based on the job. Finance and accounting positions outside of Atlanta are easier to come by than opportunities in marketing. Consulting is by far the hardest to land outside of Atlanta as the majority of the firms recruit regionally.

Thanks for the info. Also wondering, If i do a business major, is there a good amount that double major or also take courses/minor in a lib art? Because I don’t just want to do that

You can if you want. the curriculum is pretty flexible. A lot of people have double majors. Can do two BBAs or one BBA and a liberal arts major.
