business at UCSD??

Is it even worth it? I know UCSD has a developing business school but not sure what major I would take for undergrad if I went there...economics? some type of management???
UCI seems like a better school for business but I beleive I worked too hard in school to go to UCI.

any suggestions?

go for the program, not the name. Ten years from now, you can laugh at the UCSD graduate who's stuck managing red lobster while you own it up with your own business.

so you dont think going to ucsd for management science or economics is a good idea?

maybe economics... iuno. research it up

i think UCI would be a better choice maybe.

The Rady school is still under development... UCI doesn't have a real business program either so uhh yeah it's not a big comparison. UCI has business/econ, so you don't get an MBA (like I believe Cal's 5 year program at Haas) when you graduate anyways. The degree you get is not worth much unless you carry through, and at that point it doesn't matter which school your undergraduate was because they both don't have ranked programs. I'd still choose UCSD though, just in case I decide to change majors or careers.

UCSD is one of the top ranked school's for economics and you can certainly be hired with an economics degree for many jobs in business.

The BA in business is in the works for UCI, but it might not happen for a few years.

If I were you, I would contact someone at the business school at UCI (they offer minors in Management and Accounting) and the econ department at UCSD. Ask them about the different programs, internships and job opportunities.

Do you have a specific area of business you are interested in? Typically, internships and job opportunities at school will be in the surrounding communities of where your college is. I know that in the immediate Irvine/Newport/Costa Mesa area you will find companies that range from real estate, accounting, consulting, finance, entertainment and resorts (Disneyland), tech (Google), biotech, consumer products (surf companies), etc..

Good luck. (And in all honestly, both school will provide you with good opportunities)

thanks la_demoltion for your advice. Personally I am leaning towards accounting just because it has always interested me. never thougt I would be this torn when choosing what college to go to.. = /

I'm a freshman at UCSD doing management science. It's been great so far. The MBA program is offering business classes starting next quarter for students, and will offer a business minor within the next 2 years. Also, they just launched a 50K business plan competition for UCSD students (grad and undergrad), and I'm on one of the teams and we are a semi-finalist!

The MBA program has top-notch faculty, the caliber of students is already equivalent to the MBA programs of Davis and Irvine in its second year, and the dean is from the UNC-Chapel MBA program. The building is almost complete too and will be opened in June.

Athena, Beyster, and CONNECT are also great business/entrepreneur programs apart of UCSD. VentureForth.org also puts on great business/entrepreneur conferences and workshops, all on campus.

mxer210, i'm also doing management science. it's good to hear such good reviews about the major.

can i take management science as an alternative to economics to prepare for business classes? or is economics more advisable??

bump?.........

woolrich, i'm in your same position too..i'd like to major in accouting but the only thing close to it at ucsd is econ..and i just looked at uci's business..so now i dont know what to do..

Joint Math/Econ > Econ or Management Science

what kind of jobs do ppl usually go for with joint math/econ? thanks! also how good is recruitment for internship at businesses in sd? thanks!

Oyama, why would you say Join Math Eco is better than Manage Sci? ^__^;;
