Hi everyone, I wank to ask which one should I consider first between UCSD (Economics) and UCI (Business Administration)? I know it's up to me to look for the answer, but I wonder which one has a better prestige. I'm planning to reach for a MBA, so which one is the best choice for me and why? Thanks in advance.

UCSD Econ will be more challenging and prestigious I believe.

Thanks. Can you tell why? I already got accepted into both but can’t decide which one will boost into my future for getting a MBA.

Well UCSD has a good econ department from what I remember, and on top I believe you will have a broader knowledge of the business world with an econ degree…you could sell yourself better for your future MBA. I don’t see a point in getting a business admin degree at all, especially when you want to go get an MBA.

I have a similar decision to make. I have to decide between ucla biz econ and uci biz admin… I would choose biz econ right away, but getting into the major isnt guaranteed. I have to apply into the major once more after I take 2 econ classes. whereas at UCI, i have a spot already.

keep in mind that business administration degrees doesn’t mean that you will automatically be placed as a manager when you get employed. managing requires experience. An econ degree is more analytical and practical; I personally would choose that between the 2.

The two posts above me obviously have a very poor idea about what a business degree teaches and is meant for, which is especially evident in the assumption that as a professional degree it is less practical than a social science degree and that a business major is meant to prepare you to become a manager.

Economics is a social science about how people behave with limited resources, while business degrees try to focus on teaching you how to operate/be a productive member of a business with a focus on a particular aspect (for example, finance, which is somewhat like turning economics into a full on applied science where you get a head start on some of the skills you would learn on the job while you’re at it). If one of those is going to give you a better knowledge of the business world, it would likely be the business degree.

As for MBA admissions, the only reason one degree is better than another is that it sets you up for better work experience out of college.

I am not terribly familiar with these UCs, but from what I can tell, UCSD seems to be a bit more well-known than UCI, so I would assume the recruiting is slightly better there, which is really the only reason why I would recommend UCSD econ over UCI business.

Thanks everyone for their replies especially openedskittles. Now, I know which one to choose.
