Business Economics?

i know it's new, but how is the econ at uci?

what are the major's requirements?

any idea how difficult it is? anyone know how it differs from regular econ?

sidenote: how's calculus? i never took it in high school (took stats instead). is calc at uci difficult? should i study it before i get there?

thanks. :)

Econ is pretty popular at UCI and is actually one of the easiest majors here. However, as a bizecon major you're more likely to find an internship and you'll be working long hours in the future crunching numbers =].

Calculus...is calculus. It's a branch of math. I don't see how calculus can be "harder" anywhere else. But I do know not a lot of people can completely understand calculus when they first take it.

i'm actually looking into law schools after uci.

i just thought business econ was an interesting enough major; most of all i'm looking for a major to get a good gpa in for grad school.

i guess i'll try and study some calc over the summer. :)

I'm looking into going into law as well, but business is another option too. The Criminology major looks really interesting, but if I decide not to go to law school I'll have better job prospects with a business econ major. From what I've heard the businesses around UCI really like the major.

same thinking here, nschuchert.

bizecon is kind of like a back up in case i don't go to law school.

Business Econ is same as regular Econ with two more classes.

does anyone know which is better bizecon/econ at uci or econ at ucsd? thanks!..not sure which one to go to

ucsd obv. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Oh ~~business econ program is not good in Irvine? oh well... O.o

UCSD does not have bizecon so UCI wins there. However UCSD has a really strong economics program. I say it beats UCI, but I've never really looked into UCI's strengths in econ.

FYI: According to the admissions director (speech at Explore UCI) the undergrad degree in Business Admin was approved and should begin accepting freshmen in Fall 2008. No word on whether or not current students or transfers would be eligible for the major.

i'm thinking i might change to political science to make it easier on myself (less math = good) and to serve as a more traditional start point for law schools.

however, if i DON'T go to law school, i'm basically screwed aren't i? political science would get me nowhere if i don't go to law school whereas bizecon would be more difficult for me but would give me more oppurtunity.

i'm so confused. :(

UCSD offers three majors under economics

Economics (B.A)
Economics and Mathematics (B.A.)
Management Science (B.S.)

Management Science is the equivalent of bizecon. At UCD the major is called Managerial Economics. They are all business focused economics where you earn a BS instead of a BA.

The Brian - Poli Sci is a good solid major and there are some good professors at UCI. The key is to try to get good internships while in college if you go Poli Sci. I did the UCDC program while in college and then landed a good job in the "biz" world when I graduated.

The Brian calculus is a weeder course. If you have never studied it before I would definitley do so before enrolling in a class at UCI. Also make sure to get into a tutoring program there. I'm not sure about UCI but I would assume they have free tutoring just like UCD. Expect it to be very competitive and be prepared.

Okay, this may seem like a really stupid question, but what's the difference between a BA and a BS?

Bachelor of Arts vs. Bachelor of Science

which is better?

many bio majors who cannot handle bio go into econ. i am one of those people. we set the curve for economics classes.
