Business Internships

I will be a pre-business major in the fall.

I was just wondering what Internships are available at UCR? (which are the good ones).

How competitive is it to get one?

I heard theres a Walt Disney one? Anyone know anything about that?

What year can I start looking for internships?

Are there any good ones during the summer?

Any info will be helpful! Thanks!

there’s a good array of internships available in the area, but you won’t find a serious one that will make a recruiter seriously interested in you at ucr. you’ll have to look in the surrounding area for that. ucr has information about many good internships on careers.ucr.edu. you can look through scotlink. im not sure if you have access to that, but you should definitely have access after orientation.

you can start looking whenever you want. but by junior year it’s really time to start cracking on finding a serious one. like i got an internship winter quarter of my freshman year, but it’s not related to my major and i do not have much responsibility. it’s at an office on the ucr campus. i plan to get an internship that will get me something comparable to serious job experience by junior year. i think that’s about normal…

You really have to search for internships on your own. career.ucr.edu isn’t the MOST helpful when it comes to searching for internships (depending on the types of internships that you are looking for). There are events that you can attend at UCR… I’ve been to a few. It doesn’t really give me what I’m looking for, but it might be different from you. Also, most prestigious firms do not recruit at UCR, so if you’re aiming to intern at one of them, you will have to network your way into it.

Realistically speaking, being a student of UCR does not give you an edge over your competitors at all. You have to search for your own opportunities, join activities, and keep your GPA as high as possible. Remember, you HAVE to outshine UCLA, USC, etc. students in order to get an internship at middle market or prestigious companies. And if you do get it, don’t be surprised when you are the only UCR student among 10-20 students from “more prestigious” schools.

I’m not looking down on UCR in ANY WAY. I am being REALLY realistic. If you want to succeed, you will have to count on yourself. You do not have a brand name college to back you up on your resume.

As for when to start looking, freshmen year is still a bit too early. You can try to look for one, but the chances of you landing one is kind of low. Sophomore year… MAYBE. Junior year… you will definitely want to start looking for one.

What defines a good internship really depends on you. When you start searching, you’ll realize what you want from an internship.
