So, like almost everybody, I'm looking for an internship over the summer. I'm a freshman now and I want to find an internship in the field of financial services or investment banking or something like that. I wasn't sure whether or not I should just try and find my own internship through Callisto/Career Fairs, or whether I should just participate in the Berkeley Summer Internship Program. Does anybody have experience with this program? Did it actually help you find a worthwhile internship? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Getting a freshman summer internship in a legit financial services firm is very hard. For investment banking it’s almost impossible without connections. I attended the orientation for the Summer Internship Program and I doubt they can provide you with an internship to legit firms in finance. It seemed like a “for-profit” kind of program.

You should check out callisto, I see investment banking and financial internships available all the time. Just apply to every single one you see and eventually, in due time, you will get one.

i believe if you take ankur’s advice, the “in due time” will be when you are a rising senior.

i tend to agree with liquidus’ statement that as a freshman it is nearly impossible to get into a summer ibanking internship (who needs a freshman who took a bunch of GE courses this semester vs a junior with good stats and personality?) your best bet is through connections (who would want a random person over someone that they know or that they will feel guilty not giving the internship to?)

for financial services… idk. what firms did you have in mind…?

since you’re a froshy maybe you could just get a real job right now like working as a bank clerk or something? who knows where that could lead you? IDK.

summer’s fun.
