business major and business

Many universities don't offer undergraduate business majors. Does it make sense if I go to these universities even if I want to have a career in business? For example, dartmouth only offers courses in business but there is no business majors. What majors are students who want to do business from these universities? Ecnomics?

Go to the best school you can and don’t worry about being a business major. Dartmouth arguably has more successful grads in business (per capital) than any school offering a business degree except Penn. And note Wharton grads get a BS Econ. DS, interested in business, applied ED to Dartmouth. He knows he’ll do an Econ minor at minimum, but is considering a wide range of majors.

Languages, for example, are excellent prep for a global business career. Wall Street loves engineering and physics majors and hires all majors. Consulting firms love humanities majors and their critical thinking and writing skills but also hire all majors from top colleges.

I’ve never understood the appeal of an undergraduate business degree. Most business people that I know majored in other things. History, English, Philosophy, Engineering, and Physics come to mind among people I know. Come to think of it, I don’t think I know anybody who has an undergraduate business degree.

The appeal is the higher out-of-college placement rates and early career opportunities. Just take a look at some major universities graduated student surveys (VT and Berkeley are two I’ve looked at in detail) for an idea of the huge difference in unemployment rates and quality of jobs landed for students out of the business school as compared to their peers from the liberal arts and natural sciences. Even engineering and CS students do poorly compared to business school graduates when it comes to gaining full-time employment, although the ones that do often enjoy higher salaries.

Thanks everyone, all the information helped me a lot in understanding. Now I’m much less tense about getting into a school with a business major.
