Business major please help!!

  1. Hi, I will attend UTK(Knoxville) next year and I plan on doing business. I have regrets of not choosing better schools such as UGA and not applying to schools such as OSU, UW, and cali schools. I chose UTK over UGA because UTK was free instate while UGA was 30k out of state. Overall, what is UTK's reputation? I am very motivated student and had good credentials out of high school so I feel disappointed that I ultimately let financial decide for me to attend a less prestigious school. Business is a common field and hard to find good jobs so I can't help but think if choosing UTK over UGA and not applying to UC will diminish future opportunities.
  2. On a second note, does the prestige of a undergrad school degree matter? Considering I'm going to grad school for MBA. MBA I will choose prestigious schools but will prestige of undergrad matter and will a less prestigious bachelors degree ruin my chances of getting into a prestigious grad school?
  3. Last but not least, if I truly dislike UTK, is transferring a good option? The thing I worry about will be to finding a group if I transfer because I would mostly be renting an apartment but I wouldn't know anyone. At UTK I know people so it won't be a problem.
  4. Also, is transferring harder than high school? Considering the fact that I already got into UGA early action out of high school, do you think my chances are good? How about calis?(UCLA and UCSD)
  5. If I transfer but switch majors, does that account? Example: I take engineering but do bad since it's hard so I transfer to a business school to do business. But my gpa is low...

Sorry for the long post but I constantly worry about this. My family didn’t go to college so I want to make the most out of my opportunity.

Congratulations on getting into a state flagship AND going for free! Don’t regret making the right choice and now make the most of it.

You must be in the honors college, right? Do you have any advantages that come with your admission?

Why business?

Have you picked your classes yet?

Haslam College of Business has got its stuff together; I wouldn’t worry about a degree from HCB not being well-regarded. It’s not Wharton; but you should have no worries – especially if you are in a program such as Logistics/Supply Chain Management at UTK, which is one of the top 10 ranked undergraduate programs in the country. Further, don’t pick a school based on “prestige”; worry more about the fit of the school for YOU. And, if you really are intent on getting an MBA – and you have a long way to go before you need to make that call – then the so-called “prestige” of where you got your undergraduate degree really won’t matter – it’s more about grades and letters of recommendation at that point.

With regards to transfer, just calm down and see how things go for you the first couple of years.

The thing you have to remember is that if you can do well at UTK, you’ve got a degree basically for free. Then, you take that 30k x 4 years that you saved, and you can use that towards a MBA/MS/MA if you feel like you want it. And then you have 2 degrees for the price of 1!

I have similar questions… can anyone else provide info? Thanks!!

Neither UCLA or UCSD have an Undergrad Business school plus they offer no financial aid as an out if state applicant so expect to pay $60K/year. Make the best of your free undergrad degree and consider attending a more "prestigious " school for an MBA.
