business major then med school?

Could I major in something with business such as accounting and still go to med school? has anyone double majored with business/math and premed, something like biology?

You can major in anything and go to med school, but vocational majors can be looked down upon. Business has more requirements than a liberal arts major, so you might have to come in with a lot of AP credit or take extra classes to fit everything in. For premed you need a year of Bio, Chem, Physics, Orgo, Math/Stat, and English. In addition it’s a good idea to take a semester of Biochem. You can do all of that with a business major, but it’s easier to do if you major in econ.

As long as you meet all the pre-med requirements for the school, you should be fine. However, it might be tough because there will be a lot of business requirements, so you may have to (as the previous poster noted) have a lot of AP credits or take summer classes. Most pre-med students I know are biology majors, and anything at the liberal arts college (such as economics) is more likely to have more room in your schedule for the necessary classes.

You want to be a business major and then go to med school? I don’t understand this mentality.

Hey Koreanxpanda,

I used to be pre-health before switching to business, so hopefully I can be of some use here. But anyways, unlike what some people have said here, I think that if you’re willing to maybe take some extra classes/extra summer terms, it would be a good idea to do a business major if you are considering PRE-DENT (NOT PRE-MED). I took a class while I was in my pre-health stage where AOs from dental and med schools came in, and for dent school, the general consensus was that business classes were looked up favorably, but for med school, they didn’t generally like business majors. This is probably because dentists are much more likely to run their own practice and need some background in management/finance, and, as others alluded to, a business degree is seen as too vocational, and one officer said that it wouldn’t allow enough of a background due to the other requirements.

So if you have your heart set on pre-med only, I’d say try economics and take maybe a few biz classes if you’re interested because the cost/benefit doesn’t really work out and you might waste more time trying to squeeze in requirements and core biz classes. If you’re pre-dent or undecided but leaning towards dental/health, I’d say either major in econ or take a minor (not a major) in business. You’re still trying to focus on science classes, so I think a major is overdoing it, but a minor would give you a good, well-rounded background, which you need for dental work.

My roommate is majoring in marketing and is doing pre-dental (she recently decided to get a chem minor). She wants to open her own office one day, so she likes the idea of the marketing degree to supplement her science education.

She’s having no issue fitting everything in.
