can i be a business major and still go to medical school? i would like to be a dentist, i have the english composition thing down, i have some type of electives, but i haven’t taken subjects like physics, biochemistry, human anatomy, etc.
You can be a Business major, or English major or Philosophy major etc… and go to medical school. BUT you must have the pre-reqs to do so. Subjects like organic chem just to name one.
I don’t know jack about med school but isn’t pre-med kind of like a minor? You take whatever major you want to take, and then you “minor” in pre-med so you get some of your basics like bio, anatomy, etc out of the way?
As has been said, you just need to take the MCAT and fulfill the prereqs – orgo, anatomy, bio, etc. Being a business major for undergrad might distract from that and I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’d still be possible.
pre-med is not a minor. Nor is it a major. It’s a program - there are certain pre-requisites medical schools require students take before getting accepted. It doesn’t matter if those pre-requisites are taken as part of a major or as free electives.
That’s why I said “minor” in quotation marks.
Advice here is correct but for dentistry you would take the DAT and apply to dental schools, not medical schools.
If you are interested in Dental school, here is a list of required courses needed before applying. You would need to fit these in while still doing your Business classes.
Prerequisites
Students should contact individual dental schools for specific prerequisite information. Required courses generally include:
8 hours Biology with lab
8 hours Physics
8 hours English
8 hours General Chemistry with lab
8 hours Organic Chemistry with lab
Majoring in science is not a must, but completion of predental science requirements is necessary.
A college undergraduate degree is recommended in preparation for dental school. Most dental students have completed four years of college.
Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
Take the DAT at least a year prior to seeking admission to dental school. This computerized test measures general academic ability, comprehension of scientific information and perceptual ability. Completion of at least one year of college level courses in biology and general and organic chemistry is recommended before taking the DAT.
would it be good to try and double major ?
If you double major, will you be able to focus enough on your pre-med coursework and studying for the MCAT that you can get into the med school of your choice?
