Business Major- University of Michigan, University of Texas, Tulane University, SMU

I live in Texas and have been admitted to the above 4 universities (U Mich, UT Austin, Tulane, SMU), and plan on majoring in business. I am honestly at a loss of which school to choose... I have included the cost of tuition, as well as some pros and cons I see in each school.

University of Texas at Austin- (in-state tuition, $9,000)
Pros: Austin, #7 business school, fun "party" school, Longhorn football, weather
Cons: network of people from my high school, close to home

University of Michigan at Ann Arbor- (OOS tuition, $41,000)
Pros: top rated school, #2 business school, Michigan athletics, Ann Arbor, public university, "new experience"
Cons: HIGH tuition, cold weather

Tulane University [New Orleans]- ($45,000-$30,000 scholarship = $15,000)
Pros: New Orleans, scholarship money, into Honors program
Cons: New Orleans (safety aspect), average athletic program, didn't LOVE the school when I visited (did like it)

Southern Methodist University [Dallas]- ($41,000-$25,000 = $16,000)
Pros: into Honors program, scholarship money, Highland Park area
Cons: cliquey student body (girls from Texas private schools), more of a regional school

If I were to have to decide today, and it had nothing to do with cost, I would go to U Mich. However, U Mich has a 3 year business school and I am still waiting to get Preferred Admission that would guarantee my entrance into the Ross School of Business my sophomore year. My family CAN afford the full OOS tuition, its just a determination of if its worth it, because we're not swimming in extra cash either.

I really like UT, but I feel like it's in my best interest to go to a school where there will not be a bunch of people from my high school, because as I live in a Texas city, a bunch of people from my high school go to UT.

Also, on Michigan, are there any odds I could obtain in-state tuition either now or later on, like sophomore year? Also do you think Michigan would be worth it if I had to go and then apply to the business school to see if I got in sophomore year?

Any thoughts? I know Michigan is expensive, but I really like it....

ANY RESPONSE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

Go for Michigan. Best school, new experience, you won’t regret it.

Texas if your family cannot easily afford Michigan.

You have ZERO odds of getting in-state status at UMich. Unless your parents are happy paying an extra $32K/year for the same degree, go to UT. And don’t think that you can borrow that $32K each year. You are limited to a $5.5K loan as a freshman and top out at $7.5K as a junior and senior. UT is big enough you probably won’t even see your HS classmates.

Michigan is not worth it over UT Austin in state. If you’re deciding between the schools, I’d look to either Tulane or UT depending on your preferences.

UM is not worth the OOS rate if you can go to UT-Austin as an instate student. And getting into Ross is very competitive if you don’t have the preferred admit. I’d go to UT and take a semester or a year abroad or at another school if you want to get some experience living and going to school out of your home state.
