CPA Worth

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of majoring in Finance/Accounting with a minor in Math. Although I don't really want to go into the Accounting field, I was thinking of becoming a CPA. I'm not sure if I want to do this because I'm more interested in Finance. I'm not saying I hate Accounting, I just feel like I would like Finance more.

With this, is it worth it to get a CPA if I want to go into a Finance job? Or with the title of CPA actually help me get jobs and get paid more? I'm still not sure if I want to go with Accounting or Finance, so it would probably be a good fall back to get a CPA, but it'll end up costing me lots of time and money (more classes, more stress, more studying).

I think there are other more relevant certifications if you’re more interested in finance, like the CFA.

I have been a CPA for 27 years and can say that the more significant impact on my compensation has been my tenure at a major CPA firm. Back in the day it was the Big Eight. They were intense client service environments that taught you to think quickly and be right. Technical skill was a premium and intellectual ability a must. Those skills have continued today and are what get me most jobs when I have had to venture into the market. My compensation has been probably 50% higher due to my combined CPA designation and Big Eight stamp. Finance majors seem to really need the CFA designation to pull the stronger salary. I was a derivative product analyst and worked with CFAs and they generally were able to get 20% more comp with the designation. Now these salary differentials may be dated but certainly there is a difference in the market perception of a CPA from what is now the Big Four.

Taxguy and his two sons all chose to work at smaller firms. I highly doubt you are are more well-compensated than any of them. At least one of the sons graduated from the Honors College.

Dude, whistleblower1, what is your beef with taxguy? Seriously, your posts are really irritating and worthless. Take your sarcasm elsewhere because your constant attacks on him and even his family are not cool. If you’re going to be sarcastic at least be like Dawgie and provide some advice instead of just being a tool.

Yea Whistleblower1, it’s a little excessive.

I don’t see the attacks on taxguy. He is doubting the writer’s higher compensations vs. taxguy and his sons.

Lol cbreeze, you did not see his other posts about the taxguy. Even taxguy himself said him to not write about him and his family, but whistle continues to do that. I guess whistle does not believe taxguy and thinks that all posts from the taxguy are a joke.

Consider that taxguy and his two sons all graduated *summa cum laude/i, and that the sons had taxguy’s connections to help get them started in their careers. The odds are that that individual isn’t making close to what taxguy or his sons make. Experience always matters, but GPA is King.
