Business school admission

Is it any harder to gain admission to the business school than other programs at the College? How hard are the business classes considered to be relative to other classes at the school? What are the strongest/weakest programs within the business school?

Well, I can’t speak in comparison to other programs, but the business school’s admission standards aren’t really that strict. Complete the prerequisites and keep a decent GPA. That’s about it. The one time I asked, a business school admin. told me that for Fall admission, they sometimes dip down as low as a 2.9 GPA.

In terms of course difficulty, there’s a dichotomy. Most of the core classes–except the major-related courses–tend to be relatively easy. There’s a lot of less-than-3-credit courses that only last half the semester or are only one session a week or such. Those generally aren’t a concern.

However, some of the major courses, especially in accounting/finance, can be very challenging, and accounting requires more credits than any of the other majors. (You are also highly encouraged to pursue the 150 credit requirement to sit for the CPA exam).

So, really, it’s both easier and harder. It’s also a lot busier. They host so many internship/career/networking events that you’ll basically be busy just about every week (especially in Fall).

As for the strongest/weakest programs, well, I’ve found that all of W&Ms’ departments (at least all the ones I’ve taken classes in) tend to be pretty good. I will say, however, that there’s a big accounting hype right now, so if you’re looking at accounting, you’re definitely looking in the right place.

As a freshman applicant, you don’t apply to any particular program/major; you simply apply to W&M and your intended major does not fact into the decision we make on your application. Should you choose to attend W&M and major in either business or education, you must apply to those programs as a sophomore and be admitted to major in them. The other departments on campus simply require you to complete a form to declare a major within that department.
