So I've been deferred EA and was wondering if anyone who knows a bit about admissions could tell me my chances at the business school?

So I have a 4.41W GPA and a 1940 SAT (660M, 620CR, 660W). But some people from my school were accepted with lower stats, and I'm wondering if it's the fact that business is just more competitive than the other schools?

Considering NEU is one of the top up and coming schools in the entire nation (nearly a 50 ranking leap in the past 5 years), I would say that your SAT score is on the lower side. I heard from admissions this year that the average SAT score for NEU during EA was around a 2040. Aside from that, a W GPA doesn’t mean anything, they reconvert to UW. If people with worse stats got in, there are a lot of reasons for your deferral. Mediocre ECs, mediocre essays, etc. As you know NEU doesn’t have a supplement (heard they’re planning on one for next year to weed out weaker students), so the CA essay carries extra weight.

I think it’s definitely incorrect to say weighted averages don’t mean anything. I think a more proper statement is that NO gpas mean anything, because the school will reconvert ALL gpas.

Meaning, they don’t care what your “weighted” or “weighted” amounts are. They will look at your transcript and readjust based on which classes were honors, etc. This is because they are different for every single school in the country. Ex: At my school, I only took 4 classes my entire high school career that weren’t “honors”, “AP” or “IB”, but our school weighted them the same (5.0). Yet at a friend’s school, “honors” got 5.0 and “AP” got 6.0 – clearly you can’t look at weighted solely school by school. And yet it’s ridiculous to say that straight As in an IB course should get the same weighting as straight As in the lowest level your school offers.

Northeastern, like nearly all colleges, will re-weight all of your grades.

To OP - Business school is not more competitive in the sense that people tend to have higher stats (like in Engineering), but it is more competitive in the sense that it is a very popular program with limited seats. Programs with more applicants, like business, tend to be harder to get into because there is a lot more comparison going on.

@catsarecats Yeah I know my SAT is on the lower end. It just didn’t make sense to me that kids in mostly college prep classes with worse SAT scores than me got in. I take all honors at a nationally ranked public school (blue ribbon if you know what that is…), so my transcript is pretty solid. EC’s are okay but nothing special. Some of them must have applied to some of the less competitive schools than business maybe? But anyways, do I have any chance after being deferred with my stats?

Try and boost your math SAT, I was accepted with 740 math 620 reading and 590 writing 3.90/4.3 GPA. Business and engineering programs look at the math score more than other programs. While the undergrad business school isn’t more “competitive” it is ranked higher than the university, 27th in the nation (business week) while the university is 56th (us news).

@neuchimie, yeah that’s the right way to say it.

Seems like NEU was the school of choice for EA! Hope more students have good news in RD.

@ericop8 Yeah its a little too late for that now though. I only took it once and didn’t really look too much at the common data sets for my schools, and I’m regretting it now. The one thing I did do was send a letter to admissions telling them NU is still my #1.
