Business undergraduate at UNC

I’m a recently admitted bio major at Chapel Hill. I went to the information session on bio on admitted students day but not to the business one. I’ve always wanted to do premed but now I’m not so sure. How does applying for a business major/minor work? What’s the acceptance rate? Is a bio major with a business minor a good idea? I looked at the info they have online but I’m still kind of confused about how the whole process works.

It looks like you can apply to the business school after you complete your first year. It looks like transferring in is highly competitive. I have seen references to needing a 3.5, but there is no minimum GPA listed in the core requirements. I noted that if you do a business minor, there are limits on the number of business classes you can take. This is likely to prevent students from completing the business curriculm without actually being admitted to the program.
There is contact info online that I would use to get first hand info on the process (bsba_info@unc.edu or 919.962.3235)
In short, it looks like you can probably do a minor in business, but it may be near impossible to get into the business school. Therefore, make sure that there are other majors that you are interested in besides bio or business before you accept. Good luck. It’s really hard to know what you want to major in when you haven’t even started school yet.

The other important factor to consider is that if enroll and want to transfer to business, you need to make sure that you work with an academic advisor from the very first semester. Not only does this help you make sure you are taking the right courses, and give you an idea of your chances to get it, it keeps you on track for graduation. Many schools allow you to be “super seniors” and take an extra semester or more to finish your degree (sometimes at a much higher tuition rate). UNC has a strict policy which requires a waiver to stay a 9th semester undergrad. Per the website, needing additional time to complete courses due to a change in major is not automatically approved as a reason to stay.

My D was accepted OOS early and we did a college visit. She will major in business so we visited with the super friendly/helpful Kenan-Flagler folks about admission. Keep in mind that Kenan-Flagler is a top ranked business school and the acceptance rate is 50% from the UNC applicant pool so, even if you get accepted to UNC, there is no guarantee that you would be able to graduate from the business college. The earliest you can apply is September 1st sophomore year, before which you must complete the business college prerequisites. I think accepted students are notified before the end of the semester. The earliest a student can take business classes is 2nd semester sophomore year. We were told that students who are not admitted on the first try, but choose to apply in their junior years may have a higher rate of acceptance because they most likely would have done what is necessary in that extra year to improve their applications. They were very transparent about the fact they regrettably just do not have the space to accommodate everyone who wants to major in business at UNC. A UNC student can take classes at Kenan-Flagler without being accepted into the business college as space allows so maybe piecing together a minor could be possible. Certainly work with your advisor on that but graduating from UNC Kenan-Flagler is an “all in” sort of deal because thousands of kids would love that opportunity. Just my two cents and good luck to you!
