Business vs Econ

Hi everyone,

Can anyone give me a detailed analysis of the comparsion between econ and business major.

And also, if anyone is really informed on UCB, can they give a analysis of the Haas undergrad program vs UCB econ undergrad?

I really appeciated it!

If you dont get into Haas, you shoot for Econ, if you didnt take any Econ class while trying for Haas, you become a Legal Studies Major, if you cant get into that you shoot for PEIS, then afterwards, I dont know what you would do. BUT IMOPO - Haas students are stuck-up and I dont want anything to do with them.

Well I'm taking the introductory Undergrad Bus. class and the concepts that we're learning are the most obvious things you could ever learn.

"In order to find someone that will succeed at a job, you must find a person who has the knowledge skills and abilities required for the job."

Uh...

As of right now, I prefer my Econ classes. Game theory is this stuff.

I hear econ majors are known as the haas rejects. Is that true? Kind of depressing X(

business is not all glam as it sounds and i agree with voltage about the students that do business.

also, i hate the comparison with the two majors and the fact that business rejects go to econ by default, because they are, in fact, two separate studies and very different subjects. it honest to goodness bothers me when i say i am an econ major and people either assume i am applying Haas or are confused when i make it clear that i am JUST econ and have no intention to do business. they are two different things and if i wanted to eventually get an MBA then i'd rather do something a bit different with my ugrad experience.

ok sorry that was more of a rant than an explanation of the two majors.

but i am taking micro econ for business right now and it is horrible.

To clarify, I am an Econ Major and I think that it all depends on the quality of the professors that you take. There are some great professors who know what they are teaching and some that are just plain STUPID! AKA Galina Schwartz - she was the most stupidest, most hated ECON professor EVER. WE STILL TALK ABOUT HOW F***ED UP SHE WAS.

Econ is different from Business. People who go into business usually join FRATS, so their chances of getting into HAAS gets increased to 98% or whatever, but living with someone who did this, it annoyed the hell out of me. While I don't know much about the classes at HAAS, I still believe its a joke. I lived with a Haas/Business student and all he did was play games all nite long and I never saw him do work, yet he said he did above avg on all his exams and tests and that CURVES are always in the favor of the students because thats how it makes the professors look good.

Hey icy_latte, which UGBA 101A professor do you have? Oliveros or Marschak?

unfortunately oliveros.

Does anyone know if Berkeley has the same departmental Scholars program for Econ students.

Econ at Cal is horrible, the best professors I've had were at Haas. Personable, caring, knowledgeable, and had the credentials to back them up. Richard Stanton is the f'n MAN. David Distad pwns the world. Plus the classrooms and facilities were the best. Evans is a joke. I just had issue with how Haas delineates spots in their classes and is uncompromising about switches to bigger rooms at times. They get all the free stuff, too.

skooskoo, last year i was a business & econ double major, but i ended up dropping econ because i much preferred my business classes. if you are interested in business topics (accounting, finance, marketing), i would definitely say business classes are far more interesting/engaging. almost all business classes have group projects, which are both fun and helpful in understanding what you're learning. also, if you get into haas, you take classes in the summer with a cohort of students who just got in (like you), and you will take classes with many of these same students over the next two years. you feel like you are a part of a community at haas even if you aren't in a frat. and those who don't get into haas often become econ majors just because many of the prerequisites overlap- there is no negative stigma about being an econ major.

voltage55, i had galina schwartz for econ 100b, so i feel your pain. she is one of the main reasons why i am no longer an econ major- she was definitely the worst professor i've ever had.

what about doubling if you like them both?

"People who go into business usually join FRATS, so their chances of getting into HAAS gets increased to 98% or whatever"

Why is this true?

this is a bogus statistic. Its only that high because if you arent good enough to get into haas, the frat will not accept you

so what percentage of all the Haas undergrads are/were in business frats? anybody know?

Business is more like applied economics. Economics is somewhat like applied mathematics.

Business is as practical as it can get. Econ is more theoretical. It is also a lot closer to math. Business is largely accounting-- econ has virtually nothing to do with accounting. Both majors can be fairly 'easy' depending on your choice of classes.

They are very different fields. Asking the difference between Econ and Business is akin to asking about physics vs. mechanical engineering.

While many Econ majors are Haas rejects, many also didn't apply because they are either doing Math/Econ, or are pre-law. It's unfair to say that Econ=Haas reject because Business and Econ are different in many respects.

Econ=more theoretical, much more math based whereas Business=real world application. Business is targeted towards those who want to work immediately out of college. Business classes are easier subject-wise.

But yeah, i agree with a previous poster who find sit annoying when people ask what my major is. I say Econ, and they say "oh, do/did u want to go to Haas?" UH NO I DON'T. And I didn't apply.

Nonetheless, my gpa is a 3.75 and I got an A in Stats 21 and NO I DID NOT APPLY TO HAAS.

So yeah, that's my little rant. Not everyone wants to go to Haas.

You tell me how many people in Haas joined a Frat to make it look better for them so they could actually get accepted to Haas. Its not total BS, because MOSTLY EVERYONE in Haas is part of some Frat, if you have friends in Haas, ask them and I bet 9 out of 10 are either in BAP or something very very SIMILAR.

^^ Above is true. I heard rumors that these frats have some kind of secret ways to help you get in. Not exactly sure what that means, but yeah.
