Buy a stereo or computer speakers

I enjoy listening to music, however I noticed during college last year, the speakers on my computer aren't that loud. I'm wanting a fairly powerful speaker system however I'm wanting to do this in as little space as possible.

3 options:
Buy an ipod deck that has a speaker connected. (not powerful)
Buy Speakers for my laptop (I like to travel with my laptop, possible hassel)
Bring my current home stereo. (Fairly large system, 5 speaker)

The home stereo would probably be your best bet as for sound quality, but as for space( if it is a problem) then get the speakers for your laptop. Those can be relatively small. It depends on how loud you want the music and what you are going to use it for. I would suggest the laptop speakers for compact on-the-go speakers.

I got laptop speakers, definitely worth it. But even though they're small (the smallest I could find actually), it's still not very portable; so I think it would definitely be a hassle if you like to travel with your laptop.

I would get an iPod clock/alarm deck. Not so loud that you're a douche and enough to hear.

Just don't get the most high powered speaker you can get and blare it loud enough that the whole floor shakes at all hours of the night. Not that I'm bitter or anything...

Im surprised no one thought of headphones. A good set of headphones will offer excellent, powerful sound without taking much space at all. Pair it with either a Creative Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA sound card or a good USB sound card like the EMU-0202.

you should get some Koss KSC-75 phones or sennheiser hd201 if you need closed headphones (koss sound great for an insane price)

as far as speakers go i got a set of 2.1's for my laptop: http://www.amazon.com/Monsoon-Planar-Media-multimedia-speaker/dp/B00006BADM

you could get something like those and turn down the sub depending on time of day and such

I have the ihome2go, which is really tiny and folds flat so I can take it in my suitcase. I love using it as an alarm clock, and I'd say the sound quality is pretty good (but I'm not that picky).

Otherwise I'd go with smaller speakers for the laptop. Getting a home stereo system would take up quite a bit more space, and seems excessive for a dorm.

My son is a music guy who's filled up 3 Ipods full of tunes. While he owns an awesome set of Bose Ipod speakers, what he uses in his dorms are some
nice laptop speakers instead. He ended up bringing the Bose set up back home.

If you get good quality computer speakers, the sound can be great and fills both your needs for music and for regular computer sound. Because dorm rooms are very space limited, this option is pretty efficient.

I wasn't thinking about getting one, but it's tempting to have to carry around in my laptop bag...

I brought over my 6 speaker system and its working great.

i'd get speakers for your computer.. the sound quality is great i have a 3 piece logitech set that i love, and i can also hook it up to my ipod. or if you get a deck for your ipod i loved the one apple had out it was just too expensive it was on the heavy side too
