I decided that I wanted to invest in some good speakers. I'm looking for something that's not too bulky or heavy (I'm going to have to haul this around with me when I come home from college, and vice versa) and that's not too expensive. Any suggestions?

What is your budget? Do you want just stereo sound, or surround-sound? Do you want a separate subwoofer, or should the speakers have fairly good bass on their own? Do you imagine these sitting on the floor or on a shelf? How much power does your amplifier deliver? Can it handle 4-ohm speakers? 6-ohm? or is it rated just for 8-ohm?

Oh wow, I’m not good with tech terms :-/ It’s for my laptop. I wanted something to get better sound quality (obviously). I didn’t want to get anything additional for the speaker. For now, I’ll just give a (very liberal) budget of $110. Other then that, I don’t really understand a lot of what you’re talking about. I should probably do some more research. Can anyone tell me how to check what types of speakers will be compatible (if that’s the right word) with my laptop? What limitations will the kind of laptop have on the speakers I can get?

Laptops by themselves output enough power for headphones, but for separate speakers, you’ll need to amplify the signal. A bluetooth speaker might be the best solution. This will have a built-in amplifier that uses batteries or plugs into the wall. It receives the signal over bluetooth, so it connects wirelessly to most laptops, iPods, and smartphones.

Try searching Amazon for “best bluetooth speakers” and see what grabs you.

For a little more money you could get a separate bluetooth amplifier like the Pyle PCA12BT, and then buy separate speakers. Stereo sounds better when you can put more than a few feet between the speakers. The Polk Audio T15 should work well, and Best Buy has a sale right now. Together, those two items might be just what you want.

Thanks for the help

It really depends on what you’re looking for. Are you looking for a small pair of computer speakers? Or are you envisioning something more like bookshelf speakers?

Computer speakers typically come with built in amplifiers, but most bookshelf speakers are going to require a separate receiver, or some kind of pre-amp/power amp combo.
