Buying books

kinda...i have 6 books (so far). UCLA store wants $253 new; $179 used. i'm getting them for about $180 ish (all new except student solution manual for calc).

depending on ur class textbooks may be expensive, especially for science majors... 150 bucks a pop vs 120 used. i hardly see a price dent in used ones (which is why i see no point in getting them used from UCLA). OR u get them online NEW for $80 a pop. i think humanities major books are cheaper cuz i bought 3 all NEW books from UCLA online store for my HIst GE course and total came to 80 bucks.

then again Science books are often used for the next class in that series such as the Steward math book. so if u divide 150 bucks by the 4 quarters u will use it then it amounts to only 38 bucks. not bad compared to 80 bucks for my Hist Class. OR IF U BUY IT NEW ONLINE THEN ITS 80/4 = 20 BUCKS :D:D:D:D:D

My books, provided that I buy them online early as I plan (NTS- must do this week), will cost all of $70, maybe $80. Seriously.

And yeah, the ISBN trick is awesome. Hope it helped.

But getting them used has an advantage, in that you might get a person's highlighted notes, ect? I'd like to have that "upper hand" on the material, even if only a little bit.

used might also be missing CDs. and bad highlighted notes are distracting :)

just checking:
Can you buy the books directly from the store rather than online so you can look at the ones the store has available (used)?

i dont know... i think they put them in a room or something and not really show it out for display?

They leave the used books on the shelves, right next to the new books.

the ISBN view source hack no longer works. It seems that they removed it in the view page source information. I swear that the isbn information was there a while ago when I last checked for the ISBN.

Really? the ISBN is still there in the view source for me

still there for me...

is it normal to have 6 required books for one class?!

No, six books is abnormal... I can't imagine reading six books in a quarter - not even my English Comp 3 class had that many. That's a book every two weeks. Yargh.

I have 7 books for my Classics class. :(

I think I win: 11 books for Chicano/a Studies 10A and probably around 8-10 for English 4W.

But does anyone know when it's likely that the book lists for all classes will be posted? So far only one of mine is posted, and I wanted to get this book mess done and dealt with as soon as possible...

BenedictChan, I found the ISBN for all of my books on the View Source page at about the last third of the page, right or a little bit after:

// There used to be code here that hid a couple of items for nav2,3,4

and the line the ISBN is at starts with:

<INPUT TYPE="HIDDEN" NAME="sku-new-1" VALUE=

This is how it was for all of my books, changed from how allie's ambiguousness said to do it.

I guess you can ignore this if you've already found it, but there wasn't really an answer posted after. :)

thanks littleol'me! :)

Instead of scrolling down and sifting through all the codes, you can Ctrl+F, type "PREFER USED" and it'll take you there

arg i bought the wrong math textbook! i got the 900 page calc book instead of the 1500 page one. this was b4 i knew the ISBN trick. lol guess ill have to sell back and buy again..
