Buying laptop through Harvard

http://www.computers.harvard.edu

How come in their online catalog section, I only see Apple computers and softwares? What happen to PCs and windows-based laptops?

Click on the "personal login" button on the big IBM square on the front page.

IBM stuff is now "Lenovo" stuff... (ie, the ThinkPad laptops. (I've purchased two of them through Harvard - a great bargain for a solid piece of equipment.)

I tried to login several times using "personal login" button. I made my PIN a week ago, which I can use now. When I try, the webpage says "authentication" was successful and then moves on to the next page, which says that I am unauthorized to use the page.

What are the prices for laptops anyway offered at Harvard?

About a 32% discount...

You probably can't access that page yet--I have a feeling that the PINs given to admitted students do not give the same level of access as the PINs belonging to students who have indicated their intent to enroll.

Yeah, the discounts are on the 30-40% scale for some of the IBM Thinkpads. It's very nice.

Unless you need the laptop for something over the summer, I'd suggest waiting until closer to September. Prices drop and specs increase almost overnight in the computer industry.

I have advised people in the past to order around the end of July. Avoid the crush, make sure you don't get caught in a "backordered" situation for what you want, and give yourself a chance to get the kinks worked out.

I'd recommend waiting until September or August--that's when they tend to run the back-to-school promotions.

I'm pretty sure it was June before we could get one on order last year. You need a Harvard student ID number, not and admitted students login.

yes, I have Harvard ID and newly made PIN. Also, I have also commited to attend harvard.

It seems that I don't have authorized access to that webpage yet.

Now, the reason I am trying to get a laptop now is that I need one right now (a low spec one). And during September, I want to get another one (a high spec), the one that i will use at Harvard.

Ultimatemath-The site's working for me, so they must not have uploaded your information yet. You might want to think about buying a low-spec Dell laptop. Dell puts out all sorts of coupon codes which can be combined to make some crazy deals. Keep an eye on http://www.slickdeals.net/

You won't get a good deal on a low-end laptop through Harvard's contract with IBM. All the models that they offer at a substantial discount are high-end.

Phoenixy---thanks for the heads up.

justforgetme---yep, I visit slickdeals.net very regularly.

They have Lenovos over there?? Goodness me they're Chinese, they can't be any good.

Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad brand when it bought IBM's Personal Computing Division last year. They're great computers.

harvard getting amu gutman, penn president to replace foul mouth larry summers. so harvard is ranked lower than penn now.

The ThinkPads are actually produced in North Carolina from parts made all over the world. (I have two of them)
