You can't really buy the book until you get the syllabus the first day of class. Then you can go to the UCD bookstore and buy the textbooks, or go to half.com and get them cheaper.

just sign up for the textbook registration online for the used books, it's so much simpler, not the process is hard to begin with, just it makes life easier

Oh and btw, if you use textbook reservation, expect to pay up the wazoo-- the UCD Bookstore is insanely overpriced. I wait till the bookstore posts their booklist for the classes (usually a week or two before school starts), and buy my books on Half.com

P.S. As a personal anecdote, I bought a textbook for 90 from the UCD bookstore used, and I found out I could've bought it on Half.com for $50. Also, when I tried to sell it back to the store, they said they'd give me 30 dollars. I had another book that I bought off Half.com for 90, and when I sold it on Half.com the following year, I sold it for 95, so I made 5 bucks...

attend the student book exchange its around the first week when class starts. its always way cheaper than book store. go find those website where students buy books from students. I forgot those websites... and if really need the book on the spot as a last resort, still dont buy from UCD bookstore. go to the bookstore in Davis. darn...im starting to lose memory of where things are in davis during summer vacation. haha...

Uh I think they match prices on amazon.com or something. Only student discount that I can think of is the Apple products, but its a pretty small discount at best.

Do yourself a favor and buy used, preferable at the book exchange (no tax and usually 5-10+ dollars cheaper).

lets say we order it online, how much time do we have in the class to get the book? like, do we start using em right away, or do professors know that it might take a week or so to get the books?

You usually don't have to have a book to read until a week or so into the quarter (unless you can read quickly and catch up on material). English/Comp Lit is the only class that I can think of that you need, at least your first assigned book, to have right away.
