I read on the ranking and on the forum here for BYU that's it's a top school for investment banking. I've never heard of the school before this. Is this a good school for job placement also? I mean, it's only $3500 and for out of state it's $7000 and it's a "top school". What's the catch? Besides that it's a 98% Mormon population and in the middle of nowhere. The school I'm looking at now to go (99% because of financial reasons) is Rutgers. How do these 2 schools compare?

What's the catch? The catch is more than you ever bargained for... It's a private university, so the 4k only applies to mormons. One more thing, you don't touch a business course until your junior year, "if you get into the highly competitive Mariott SOB." Also, they have these missionary trips you go on, so expect to be in foreign, poverty stricken countries for months at a time. I heard from this kid, an athlete, got kicked out for missing church, so make sure you attend church! There is no caffeine allowed on campus, some bogus mormon law, so don't plan on drinking anything but water.

My point, Mariott isn't great or anything, it's just companies want Mariott graduates because their ETHICAL! This is why you don't have dumbasses on here floating about applying here, even though their highly ranked.

and they also don't allow monogamy..

yeah... false.

Mormon hating aside, Irish is right about the tuition. You get the preferred rates that you mentioned if you belong to the LDS church. I think for non-LDS, the tuition jumps up to something more in line with a private university.

Irish, I disagree with you about their value as an undergrad. BYU has strong networking opportunities, especially for members within the church and they are heavily recruited by top firms.

And they don't allow polygamy. If you want that then you'll have to go to northern Arizona or wherever they are now. Unfortunately, this is a stereotype that is always brought up. However, early marriage is a trend and so you'll see that there are many students who are married and have kids, even if they're only sophomore and juniors. From what I remember, there might actually be a dress code for girls, e.g. no shorts, no tank tops, no bikinis. Maybe I'm wrong.

No caffeine, no tobacco, and no alcohol. Basically, their doctrine says that you shouldn't take anything that has the risk of you becoming dependent on it.

Wow... I'd never attend that school

I had an opportunity to recruit a BYU undergrad (went for his PhD at Purdue). He did his missionary work in Japan.

He's one of the most wise, hardest working and principled colleagues I've ever had. Now, when I have openings, I always tell my recruiters to keep an eye out for BYU grads.

I think you will only need to go on a mission if you're actually LDS. If you're not and you choose to BYU, expect HEAVY pressure to join the church.

i hear they have these magnificent private ranches where the freshmen dorm...

Yeah, but you have to meet babymaking quotas.

why would non-mormons go to, or even apply to BYU?

^karot^

yeah, to the list of caffeine, tobacco and alcohol add latex.

I was heavily considering it once, but decided not to... Why do you think I know so much about it? The students go there to get married, period. The wive(s) settle down after graduation, while the husband works. I was only considering it, due to the cheap tuition and I wanted to get into IB THAT BAD!!! I put down the idea after I thought everything through. Plus, me not being religious, I couldn't get in anyway. You have to have these endorsements by their church, and there isn't any Mormons in TN that I know of... If you don't get one; you're out. Although, it's really hard to get in besides that. Don't let the 75% acceptance rate fool you. The average incoming GPA is like 3.75 and a 30 ACT. If your Mormon, and you don't get into the Ivies; welcome to BYU! More importantly, if they didn't guarantee me a spot into Mariott; I wasn't going to risk it. I wasn't going to be miserable for two years, not even taking a single biz class.

Also, just to put it out there, BYU's football team sucks. The BCS needs to change their whole system, just a bunch of crooks. If BYU played an SEC team, they would be simply, killed.

Don't go to BYU for its business program.

wow…a bunch of you are wrong! especially the irish guy!!!..and you shouldnt talk about the mormon faith or BYU if you dont know anything about either! :)

tuition for non-LDS students is roughly $8 thousand, which is super inexpensive in comparison to most other private universities.

mormons dont believe in polygomy (marrying more than one person)

BYU-no they do not kick you out for not going to church because not everyone that attends BYU is mormon and we beleve in free agency meaning you have a choice you will get kicked out of BYU if you are caught with illegal substances, alcohol because its in the code of ethics that you sign

BYU’s buisness, law, and nursing schools are all in the top 50 in the nation–they’re great and I would go there for school!

Nobody is required to go on a mission even if you’re mormon–its a choice that most young men choose to do because they were raised that way…but you dont HAVE to go on a mission and you cant go on a mmission if you arent a member of the church!..sheesh!

Hope this helps clear some stuff up–its a fantastic school with really nice people and good academics!

The ignorance in this thread kind of makes my head hurt.

Irish, do they have to take classes that teach how to go door to door selliing the book of lds?

my son has several Mormon friends; they are all going to BYU; they are all very bright, positive, and “normal”. I don’t think it is the Mormons that go door to door by the way.

Yes, the Mormons do go door to door. There is no such thing as the book of lds. I assume you are referring to the Book of Mormon. Undergrads at BYU take religion courses, as is the case at many universities with a religious nature.

Steve Young, a nonmormon, NFL hall of famer, and national merit finalist went to BYU.

Steve Young is not a non-Mormon. He is quite active, and a great great great grandson of Brigham Young himself.
