Byu

I've been looking at Brigham Young Univeristy, and have been rather impressed. I want to major in linguistics and they are siad to have one of the best programs. My concern is that i'm not LDS (mormon). They say they excep people of all faiths, but my expirence in the past with relious schools is that "outsiders" arn't as welcome. I live 16 hours away, so a visit is a little out of range right now. Does anyone have any expirience with the school or any advice?

Here's some advice:

BYU is a good school that makes you earn every grade you get (a good thing, IMO). Also, "outsiders" are very welcome at BYU. In fact, they treat outsiders better, for the most part, because they want to convert them to mormonism. It's a subliminal goal of the school: bring in non-LDS kids and covert them to LDS.

Additionally, keep in mind, part of the required curriculum at BYU is LDS scripture studies.

(Being from Salt Lake, and very familiar with BYU--I have many friends who graduated from there, and who go there.)

Students at BYU have great work ethic and the academics are excellent. Since you aren't LDS I'd warn you that it is a very strict school and the rules for the mormons would apply to you as well. Many students can't handle the strict nature of the rules, so look into the rules very carefully before you make a decision.
