In the eyes of a college admissions officer, if you get a C/D in an AP class, but get a 4/5 on the test, does that in effect cancel your poor grade in school, making it an A/B?

It shows that you know the material and either (1) are at a school with wicked grade deflation; (2) had a bad teacher; or (3) are lazy. (3) is probably the case for most such occurrences, but I can’t speak for your situation. I suppose it will also depend on what your other grades are like. Also, AP scores are self-reported. Any way you look at it, it’s quite a bit worse than getting an A/B.

No, especially not in any test that’s not a math/science one. A grade in an AP Course also reflects your ability to keep up with a college level curriculum, not just your mastery of material.

^ Whoa, dig the name

Getting a 5 on an AP History/Social Science/Foreign Language Exam is mostly just knowing the material in a 4 hour period.
It will only help a little.

But for AP Calc/Chem, etc. you might be OK.

I think the exam score is weighed less than your class grade/GPA. Therefore try to get good grades and worry about the AP test in spring. AP exam grades are self reported so you can “omit” them.

Well, in the eyes of a student (you), what do you think would happen to the kids who get an A/B in the class and also get a 5?

I think AP scores can only help you, but AP grades will help or hurt you(mostly hurt for top schools)

Brahs, AP Physics is killing me. I ordered PR AP Physics C but I might just be getting a C in the class and a 3 on the exam.

In my school, kids with Cs in BC calc get 5s. It’s a really hard class, but you learn very well. I think I will get a B :

I know a friend at one school that’s pretty ghetto but offers AP classes with very low pass rates. The teachers automatically change the kid’s grades to A’s if they get at least a 3 on the exam.

I would love that school. :\ Especially for those history classes with easy tests but often hard classes.

^That’s how it is for me with AP Calculus AB and I’m pretty sure AP Physics C as well. It’s gonna be sweet. I’m in both classes.
