C+ in First Quarter of Senior Year. Advice needed.

Will getting a C in AP Macroeconomics in the first quarter of my senior year hurt my chances of getting into some schools?

I've in the AP/Honors program of my school for my whole high school life which means I've been taking the hardest curriculum offered at my school. I'm an A student and I've only gotten 5 B's in my whole high school career, which were in 9th & 10th grade. In 9th grade I took all honors classes, AP Human geography, and electives. In 10th grade, I took all honors, AP World History, and electives. In 11th grade, I had all A's the whole year; I took all honors, 3 AP classes, and electives that year.

This year, I'm taking 6 AP's and 2 electives. For first quarter grades, I have all A's in my classes except AP Macroeconomics, which is a C+.

I know that if I get at least a B in AP Macro next quarter, the semester grade will average out to a B. But I'm just afraid that my chances of getting into colleges like Notre Dame, Rice, and Georgia Tech will lower because of that first quarter C+ in AP Macro. I know my school releases only semester grades on our transcripts, but I'm not sure if midyear reports are shown as semester grades or quarter grades.

So my question is, if I apply RD to schools like Notre Dame, Rice, and Georgia Tech, will my chances of getting in decrease because of that one C+ (if it does show on my midyear report)?

If it’s only one class, then I don’t think it will be that much of a problem (my problem may not compare to yours, but I’m “only” making a B in my honors english class right now). As long as you’re showing that you’re working hard in all your classes and you’re making good grades in nearly all of them, I don’t think one subpar grade will doom your application.

I would think that if you’re applying RD then only the semester report would be sent, so if you boost that C+ it won’t show up.

You might want to apply EA or ED so that grade does not necessarily get reported before an admission decision is made. If given the opportunity to do an interview, you might want to say how you like to challenge yourself by taking classes outside of your comfort zone. Usually it works but not so much this semester in Econ but you have no regrets because you find the subject interesting. That may mitigate the lower grade.
