Hi everyone. I’m hoping this can be helpful for someone who could use a few more school acceptances. Please join in.
SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) accepts on a Rolling Base. Tuition may be a little cheaper than Urban Schools and they have a state of the art program for MT and Acting/ Film, Directing
Stellar Adler 2 year program is still accepting applications in LA and New York
Cornish College last week was accepting Video Auditions for Acting (unsure of MT please check)
Columbia College in Chicago accepts on a rolling base
Loyola University Chicago has a strong BA in Theatre Performance with an Acting track. You can pair it with a Musical Theatre certificate. They have rolling admission and no audition. The faculty is very connected.
Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY has a BA with BFA option their Sophomore Year. Highly decorated faculty and less than 20 miles from the city. Rolling admission. No audition until Spring of their freshman year for the BFA track.
Thanks, @actorparent1 it looks really REALLY Good. 3 Years is no different than the 3.5 Years at Rutgers. If acting/Performing is what your kid wants to do, why not? Clearly, these people have connections. The locations can’t be beaten and the price is comparable to the other programs (maybe a tad cheaper) If the goal is to be a working artist, why not?
It’s a worth a try! They have a fabulous program. I applied there because I have yet to get accepted anywhere, and I was still rejected from Stella Adler. These programs are so competive. It’s hard to know what they want
Got an email from Willamette in Salem, Oregon. Extended Deadline. This is one of the 40 colleges that change lives (from the book by Loren Pope – highly recommend if you have younger children still in high school). My oldest daughter was accepted there and we visited on admitted students day. She chose her “safety” school in sunny Florida, instead, but we were very impressed with the faculty, campus, academic opportunities and THEATER. Wow. She is not our theater girl, but Willamette is apparently known for its fine B.A. in Theater in Oregon. Its also a nationally ranked liberal arts school.
@actingdreams I couldn’t agree more now that I have had one daughter go through 2 years of college. She now wants to specialize in the business side of fashion and wants to go to SCAD for graduate school ($$$) rather than pursue the accelerated MBA program she is currently in (and why she went to Rollins in the first place). She is growing from her liberal arts education and I want her to have that, but I am now realizing that I should have known that she wasn’t ready to fully benefit from the liberal arts education now (so exhausted from working sooo hard in high school) because she is a very practical, hands-on kid who likes to WORK for money, not an intellectual. She could have benefitted far more from a very specific trade education (like fashion merchandizing at SCAD) where the internships and connections are all established.
My D asked me recently if she should apply to Stella Adler and I said No because she, unlike her sister, is much more intellectual and contemplative and I think she is ready to thrive with a liberal arts experience.
But, gosh, I wish I had the benefit of hindsight with my first kid! Lesson learned about trusting my instincts when it comes to knowing my kids specific needs! Many of these BFA programs are probably too long (just like the third year of law school) :-S
@Noreplays2018 this is why I value this forum. I think our experiences are supposed to help the next people (it’s my little way of trying to leave the ladder down and save some steps for the next group) I am glad your daughter found her path early on. There is nothing like an expensive lesson! you caught it right in time… Kudos for her! we know our kids
@Noreplays2018 Your post struck a chord with me. One school is a little more geared toward “doing” (or, let’s fancy it up “experiential learning”) and that’s the one I hope my kid will pick. Honestly, at his age, they are really just learning about themselves. I don’t even know if he realizes he’s a “doer” learner. When I mentioned to him that he was an introvert, that seemed like news to him. Which, OMG, he’s a huge introvert. Rich inner life. lots of time alone, great writer. When I see him on stage, its amazing that he has all this inside of him. Hoping accepted student days will help move things along.
