what are cab fares like to nashville airport or green hills mall? do many students use cabs for these destinations and to get around town or are there other options they prefer?

if i remember correctly, cabs to the green hills mall are about $15-20 depending on how many people there are, but i’m not too sure because i almost never took them. as for other transportation services, i used music city sedan services to get to and from the airport and that cost $25 each way. i think there is also a bus that leaves from a nearby hotel that costs like $12 or somewhere around there, but it only leaves at certain times. what i did for most of my traveling was sign up for zipcar which lets you rent a car that is on campus (i think there’s about 6 of them). i usually got the one that was $7 an hour but there were others that were slightly more expensive. all you have to do is go to zipcar.com to register and it will tell you how to reserve cars etc, just make sure you do it as a vanderbilt student because we get to rent the cars at an earlier age (18 not the usual 21). the only problem with that is if other students rent the cars out at the same time, which i did not have much of a problem with until closer to the end of the year when i guess more people caught on to the idea. also, VSG runs shuttles about once a month to target, kroger, and sometimes the green hills and oprey mall and also to the airport when it’s time for break. i’m pretty sure vandy students can take the bus for a reduced if not free price (again i never did this though i know other people have).

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend taking a cab to Green Hills or Target because once you are finished, it can be a pain getting them back to pick you up. Definitely utilize the VSG shuttles. Taxi service to the airport is usually a flat fee $20-25.

you can take the bus to green hills for free. my friends and i did that a lot last year. the vsg shuttles are nice and also free.

I thought my son got a free van ride from Vanderbilt to and from the airport at holiday times. Is that incorrect?

VSG also runs a shuttle to the airport at certain holidays. It’s a few bucks but only runs on one given day in a certain time frame. So if your flight is a day earlier or later, etc. a cab will probably be required.

My D used both the Vandy airport shuttle & another airport shuttle, depending on when she was leaving. The Vandy airport shuttle only operates for a couple breaks, and the hours are limited. It’s a great way to go, though, if it fits your kid’s schedule. Once the Vandy shuttle was too crowded, so they paid for taxis for the overflow. The airport shuttle was only $12, I think, each way. It ran every 1/2 hour, even in early morning & late night. D’s dorm was across from Lowes, and she just walked over there to catch it. Once it rained & the driver took her back to her dorm instead of making her walk from the hotel!

D used the Zipcar a few times for shopping trips and appointments. The only caution with the Zipcar is that you can’t go over your reserved time AT ALL without a big penalty.

D wouldn’t ride the bus - we live in an area where only really sketchy people ride the bus, so she couldn’t get past that. I think the bus is a great way to go … heck, it’s free.

Let me warn you about the bus. It’s free, yay! and if you catch the right one, you’re there in like 12 min (to green hills mall). BUT don’t you miss the returning the bus or you will have to either a) wait an hour for the next bus or b) call a cab. My friends and would plan our shopping trips around bus times, and they pretty much come at the same tiem every hour (so we’d look online to see when the next bus was coming to the stop near Vanderbilt, and then plan to stay at the mall for a little less than 3 hrs to make sure we caught that next bus) or if we were going to dinner late at night, we’d take a cab. Don’t be afraid of the bus, just don’t miss it :)
