Cadets: which CC dinner most memorable? fun? disheartening? weird?

So cadets, which of the three CC dinners stood out in your mind(s) for any reason? Which incoming 2012-er most surprised you?

the two i went to were both yummy and fun. nothing in-particular stood out. as for 2012ers... no comment? haha

I enjoyed both of the dinners I went to. No one in particular stood out to me during the dinners, but during the actual Orientation I was very impressed with zzztriplenickle, who was hosted by one of my squadmates. Keep it up, zzz, and you'll do well.

I'd say that the 2nd and 3rd were the most memorable. 2nd for the size and 3rd for the generosity of the parents and the good discussions we had. I have my concerns, but like eagle, no comment. I was impressed with people like missmuff, CAfalcon, AZcadet, airforce16, the fencers, and many others. Good luck to you guys! :)

Do the incoming cadets seem to be on equal footing as the young people in your classes?

Could you clarify what you mean by the young people in our classes? (I might add that people like G4C, eagle, and myself are among the youngest in 2010).

I just meant to the kids you met at the 3 dinners compare favorably to the kids in your class of 2010, 2011, etc.

I met a young man at our hotel who was debating between USAFA and USMA where he also had an appointment. I pegged him for the Army immediately; he had ground-pounder written all over him and even had the career goal of "tank commander." But, he played football (I think; he was one huge guy!) and was trying to decide if he should play it in CoSpr or NY. He was from one of the Dakotas (I think). Did anyone else meet him? I think his name was Ross (or maybe Rob).

Gotcha. I think that most compared to a typical cadet. Some impressed me by the academic backgrounds they had (the people that went to larger schools with large AP/IB programs have a distinct advantage) while those from smaller schools worried me. The main reason is these people are usually top dogs in a smaller setting and are very shocked by the challenges of the Academy and not being the top dog (at least without trying anymore!) like they used to me.

To me, academics are the biggest breaker. If you can excel academically, then you can do well here from any background (I have no military background personally). By succeeding academically, then you have time for athletics and military duties without worrying about failing a class.

For the most part, most people have the right attitude. If everyone keeps that up, they should do just fine. ;)

Hope that helps.

Ouch, hornet! Failing a class. I'm hoping my guys do ok. They have two years of college experience so even though they come from homeschooling backgrounds, they do have some kind of classroom experience.

I met a young lady on the bus in the morning from Atlanta who wants to be a doctor and to play tennis. She was very smart! She is the only one from her school to ever go to any academy, and her GC really didn't know how to help her. I saw her briefly the next day (Tues) and she said that she was nervous but hoped to do well.

Hornet has it right regarding the importance of academics, just like applying to the academy, academics has the greatest weight on your overall rating as a cadet (academics > military > athletics). I attended a parent's club meeting this past weekend to pack goodie boxes for finals, and compared to the appointee picnic last June, it was really amazing to see how relaxed the 4 dig parents were. I know the 2011's are probably pretty anxious to finish the academic year at this point, but finish strong and enjoy the summer !

You've made us proud.

Fencersmom - I am a 2010 parent. Would it surprise you to know that there are a number of 2010 cadets (let me be clear, I am not speaking of anyone on CC) taking physics for the second time and stressing they may not pass again and hoping they do, but if not, may be giving up leave to take it a third time this summer? Diff.Eq., Calculus - these two subjects can also be killers for the cadets.

You can recover from military and physical deficiency, most of the time, much, much easier than academics.

These cadets on CC may sound brutal, but heed their warnings. They know of what they speak! And, after two years being in the program, they are pretty good at assessing and sizing up the incoming appointees. Not perfect, mind you, but pretty good.

I have no doubt they want success for all incoming kids! The goal for mentoring and posting is to help. Sometimes it doesn't sound pretty.

all i can say is that i really liked orientation and was happy i went. it was a real honor and privelage to meet hornetguy, G4C, eagle36, redhead and others.

I really enjoyed the dinners as well and am very grateful to be a part of such a great community here on CC. Somewhere between sharing my wonderful senior prank story with hornetguy, and shadowing petko for the next couple days, a lot of the hesitation to leave home vanished as I quickly realized tht it is the place for me. Lets just hope it remains tht way...;)

I liked sitting directly in the middle btw, it allowed me to listen to the discussion to my right, led by all those except redhead, while listening to the interesting information she had to offer to my right... Allow me to put an emphasis on "interesting"...

Haha, how many of you fellow 2012'ers really had questions? Because I definitely felt ahead of the game thanks to the help of all you current cadets... Thanks to those of you that attended the 3rd dinner and any tht could not make it, I am sure we will cross paths at some point. I look forward to being the piece of poo beneath all of you next year...;)

haha, yeah all my questions were answered by the time i got there. add in some good food and a long day of flights and it's a recipe for laziness. i enjoyed the dinner greatly! it was cool to get to meet the cadets that i havent already met! :)

falcons '11,

thanks for the complement!

it was great to meet you... and your squad... just an awesome experience.

i am hoping for the best ... and promise to do my best.

The dinner was definitely one of the best parts of the trip :D
Great idea, you people!
Next year, we're gonna have to book a restaurant! :)

As a side note, fencersmother, you made me laugh! What, are the cadets going to say, "yes, the second group was disheartening to see because they were a bunch of lazy know-it-alls" ? hehehehehe just teasing

Another thing...My mom enjoyed that dinner as much as I did! And as a result, she enjoyed the rest of the trip. Because she knew people, she had cronies with whom to hang out, and they "adopted" other loner parents too. And I enjoyed meeting appointee's parents (I actually think everyone at our dinner already signed, no?)

What a good time! Now I'm blabbering. ;) Missmuff has spoken.

PS, af16, do tell (senior prank)!

ahh his senior prank story is great :)

Well as long as yall promise not to laugh...

So this happened like beginning of last month. I rally up 7 guys and gals, all of us top 10 in our class, NHS president, all Boys and Girls of the month, none of us had ever been in trouble(sick and twisted irony)... So I distract the security guard while another boy enters through the UNLOCKED front door and lets everyone in through the back. The began to pull the prank, which was to ziptie all the lockers shut. They dont have locks, just a hole to put one through. We were about 3/4 done when we heard him walkin around on his cell phone but we wanted to finish. 5 minutes later I am lookin out the window, and the "fuzz" show up... We bail at the back cuz we walked, didnt drive like the thought and we got away. Too bad one girl left her wallet with her ID behind, and she was leter ID'd in my car and I got pulled over. We told em wht happened and they kept tryin to scare us, which of course we were. Monday rolls around and the admin call all of us down together as the whole school cheers. They had 7 guys in a room, prolly to balance out the 7 of us? Not to sure bout tht one... They give us the "Wht do you think is a good punishment" question and we were all pretty general with taking wht we deserved. Got the boot for 3 days, but it was a mere slap on the wrist cuz the police were cut out of the matter because it was fairly harmless. An article appeared in a local paper saying tht wht the school did was extreme, but we really didnt mind. The parents were all pretty cool cuz its not like we do this regularly, besides it was a good prank... ;) Goin out with a bang! :)

And I shared with my ALO and he laughed as well...

niiiice
:)
always enjoy stories of a good prank, though i must say, the police have never been involved in any of mine! :P

The security dude was an... Nah not worth it... ;)

It happens though, and it makes for a great story...
