Hello Friends,
I'm currently a high school student intent on being a film major for undergraduate.
I've been looking into a couple of film schools, with about half a dozen on my list. I was curious, however, about the Cal Arts film/video production major. I know Cal Arts is renowned for their animation majors, but I was wondering if anyone had experience specifically their film/video production major and if it can compare to other film schools like LMU, Chapman, NYU, and USC. I do have experience in animation, just not enough that I would make it my major.
I've seen some of their live-action reels and the cinematography isn't anything special, but the plot and scripts were definitely trying to come off as 'artsy' and 'deep' (some quite successfully).
Anyways, does anyone have experience with this? I'd love to go to Cal Arts, but if they only excel in the different form of animation and not live-action... I'd rather find another school.

Four years ago when D visited Cal Arts, at information session presenter distinctly discouraged her from applying if her interest was in traditional narrative film, emphasizing their focus in animation and art. Their facilities didn’t seem to be up to the level of the other schools you mention. Can’t say if it has changed in four years, would be curious for the viewpoint of current student there.
