To start things off, I went there and it was pretty fun. In the morning, the weather was a bit cloudy, but then it cleared. (for those of you who don’t know, that IS the typical weather here in NoCal.) And Telegraph street was very lively, bustling with people. I also checked out the dorms and the residential halls are comfy, not spacious but adequate. For all the fun though, the Res Halls are definitely better than Foothill because it is situated in the middle of all the fun. (and Res Hall 3 is more social than Res Hall 1 & 2 so.)

As for bums, I think I saw three in total. I also saw a pair of lesbians. I’m sure there’s more bums and things in the night though.

As for the rumor of ugly people in Cal, I have to say it isn’t true. I saw a lot of hot chicks but it’s not like they are abundant or anything.

I loved it, campus is beautiful, all the halls and buildings actually give it the "campus" look. I think I'm gonna live in Unit 1 or 3. There were some good lookin girls and I think the rumor is false.

I had a lot of fun at Cal day...
the weather was beautiful today, a perfect day for everything. The campus looked especially gorgeous today, and I love the energy there. ^_^
I've been around the campus before, but I actually got to see the residence halls for the first time. I have to say, from all the stuff I've heard about the size of the rooms, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the rooms were not bad at all. I saw a lot of "potential" hangout spots around the halls.. so I thought that was cool. I really don't understand how the rumors about ugly people at berkeley started. I saw plenty of good-looking people... but really, there are people of all types everywhere. Berkeley is no exception.
There is a rich presence at berkeley, and I have to say I liked it a lot.
Oh yeah...and I bought my first Cal sweater today. =)

how annoying was the freshman extension speech thing? q and a in the middle of the presentation, come on! haha i was the one who asked about requesting roommates. for anyone who was there. and for anyone who is still here....LUAU PARTY TONIGHT!!! WHOOP WHOOP.....yay go greek life!

I bought this really cool Cal hat today... but it cost 18 bucks. o well

Eh the engineering department was fine. There were auditoriums with speakers for each branch of engineering talking. I went to the Bioengineering one. It didn't matter to me since I'm Engineering-Undeclared so I thought I'd check it out...

I liked the flexibility of bioengineering in terms of choosing classes although it is not ABET-accredited. People in the audience were asking the guy to compare Berkeley's program with UCSD's bioeng program. And obviously the guy said Berk was better. He said that it is more flexible and showed us this maze-like pic of SD's bioeng cirriculum. He also said Berk had more faculty and more research opportunities. I'm sure SD people would refute this but anyways. I was a bit annoyed when they kept boasting about Cal being rank 1 in engineering, which I thought was untrue. (Isn't it MIT?)

Then afterwards, we went to the student-led-conference type of thing. It was pretty amatuerish in terms of the students speaking. There was a guy who had an accent and I guess everyone in the room had trouble understanding what he said so I'm sure that gave a bad impression of the students in Engineering lol. Also there was this girl talking about stuff which I forgot but she messed up her speech and was unprepared. She even admitted it herself and I guess that was bad. I know I would be pretty damn embarassed if I screwed up, albeit I'd get nervous first. My general impression of Engineering was okay although they coulda worked better on the student part. I guess they were all too hard studying or whatever.

But there were other good student speakers who gave honest opinions about Eng. One parent asked about the cutthroat competition in Eng. To this, the guy basically replied that at the lower division classes, which are large, the curve is pretty damn high because theres a lot of other people from other colleges that are competing with you. Plus there are pre-med people who basically have to get high GPA or else they are screwed for medical school so they have to screw you over in order to do that. He even said that he didnt like the lower division courses because of this but he enjoyed the upper division courses which had a more generous curve and involved more teamwork.

On the note of girls, I think I didn't see hot Cal girls but rather it was amongst the sea of people visiting. They may be prospective students but a lot looked like UCLA prospectives too lol. I saw like 3 people wearing UCLA shirts and I was amazed they weren't egged or something.

Edit: Oh yeah and about dorms, residential halls are probably the farthest away from the Engineering buildings so thats such a pain in the butt to walk there. I wouldn't want to live in foothill dorms even though its way closer to the buildings because I heard its pretty boring and nerdy. I kinda like UCLA's res halls which are all close knit and you can go to other res halls to eat, play, or study.

So which speeches did y'all listen to?? I'm curious.

Oh my, it was outstanding--but a few odd things happened while I was there.

I and a group of friends were walking from unit 2 to unit 1 and some AS5HOLE threw a bottle of orange juice from the very top of the building and it exploded right in the middle of us.

but anyhow

the dorms were SO FREAKING NICE, omg... the entire campus us beautiful--i loved it so much.

Also, i found this amazing restaurant off of telegraph on durant, called gypsy's OMGGGG it was delicious. i had a CAL zone =P

Boules Hall suck (thank goodness I checked it out).

I was there Thurs., Fri., and Cal Day. It was completely awesome...I want to go to Berkeley now. I need a few days to rest to let the euphoria wear off so that I can make a better decision. Too tired to write more.........

y cant bowles b co-ed!!! i love the whole castle look. yea cal day was awesome i never thought i'd like the campus that much....i didn wanna leave!! haha

I just got back and I was there on the same days as eiffelguy. It was awesome!!!!! I met so many nice people and the dorms were great. I guess they're small, but they're in much better condition than the ones at UCSD. I couldn't believe how much of a good time I had. It was pretty cool how a protest happened to be going on right when my bus pulled up at Cal. The best part was how nice the Cal students were and how willing they were to talk to me. I sprained my ankle last night, but that doesn't matter because Cal is the best. Go bears!

It's hard for me to fall in love with anything that doesn't have boobs. But I probably came as close as possible with Berkeley today. I had a lot of fun and feel priveleged to be a future part of that university. One thing that you guys mentioned, and that I was superficially thinking of on the ride home, was the total myth about girls at Cal. I saw more great looking girls at Berkeley than I saw at UCLA and USC COMBINED. To be fair, some of them may not have been students. But most of them were. And unlike UCLA girls, these ones actually make eye contact. That's right, I got like 4 consecutive eye contacts with the same gorgeous girl as she walked past me into the Unit 3 elevator. Even though they say it's not as good as Unit 1 or 2, I certainly wouldn't mind living there.

Also, I like UCLA, but Berkeley is so much more real and colorful. Even if the streets were completely empty, it would still have life because the city itself has its own energy separate of the people. I understand what people say about it being subjective, you either love it or you hate it, but I don't understand why people were actually telling me how bad it was, and not to go there. I probably drove through the scariest part of Berkeley, and it wasn't scary at all. Just a lot of Hispanic guys on the street staring at the cars that go by. Big deal.

So Berkeley is great, I'm completely impressed, and I look forward to going there. Even if it gets impossibly hard, it won't ever get boring because the place is so nice that you just have to go outside to find something to do. The most boring thing you could do is walk down Telegraph and buy some ice cream and just wander around. And even that is enjoyable.

I didn't have the chance to explore other areas of the lively campus but what other fun places are there besides the telegraph ave area? Also, is the "Scariest" part of Berkeley refering to the area before the front entrance? I thought that was bad but then again it's pretty far away from the res halls that it shouldn't matter. Just dont go there or something.

I would say the scariest part of Berkeley would be People's Park. We walked by it (at night) which was the stupidest idea in the world. In the daylight, it still looks a little creepy.
