it seems like people are just asking the same question over and over and over and no matter how many times people answer they still ask the same question again? very odd indeed. oh well, paying for school is stressful. i know. good luck dudes.

I have no experience about financial aid lol, this is my first time receive it, so it must be exciting. I love free money though lol. I don’t want to pay for school since i v already know that i can get it for FREE, pocketed 30k lolol

well, if you did not live in california it would be a ‘world of pain’ and no money for school. our parents (and me because i am older) paid the taxes to fund the grants. so that is cool. good luck dudes! congrats on getting into a UC.

Lets use my financial aid from UCI as an example.

Gift Aid (w/ Blue & Gold)
Federal Pell Grant: $4,900.00
UC Irvine Grant: $15,913.00
Total Gift Aid: $20,813.00

Financial Aid People - “Oh look, he has a Cal Grant A.”

Gift Aid (w/ Blue & Gold)
Federal Pell Grant: $4,900.00
Cal Grant: $12,192.00
UC Irvine Grant: $3,721.00
Total Gift Aid: $20,813.00

Cal Grant does not add on to your gift aid. It merely replaces the money the UC is using to cover your as$. :)

I never got an email about this. Did you find out your amount using the site mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov ??

How long do cal grants last?

I’ve been at a community college for two years now and received a cal grant both years.
I will be transferring to UCSD next fall. As an engineering major I can expect to be there for 3 or 4 more years due to lack of prerequisites.

Is there a limit on how many years I will receive a cal grant?
Is it also the same for pell grants and UC blue and gold grants?

^ Pretty sure they last 4 years. I was at CC for 3 years and it says that I have one year remaining.

Any idea why my application status still says ‘Pending Cal Grant Renewal’? I have green checks for FAFSA and GPA Verification.

^Renewals don’t come out until June. These are new calgrant recipients.

mine says “pending cal grant renewal” also, but I’ve been receiving cal grants at my community college for two years. Only $1551 a year tho (thats cal grant B)

But I will be getting cal grant A at UCSD. So by being a “new calgrant recipient”, will i be getting a new 4 years of cal grant aid?

Thanks, kingdomsroa48. I should have read the webgrant website closer. >.<

You guys need to learn to read what people are saying lol

@integraballer The simple answer is no. Every student who qualifies has 4 years of cal grant. It is up to the individual how they use these 4 years. If you used your cal grant at a CCC, it will count as a year of cal grant. So if you used 2 years at CCC already, you have 2 years left.

Also, the cal grant you were given at CCC will not change. If you were rewarded Cal Grant B, it will stay cal grant B even when you change schools. (The same with Cal Grant A.) Do you really think the government will let you switch to cal grant A and get another 4 years? lol. Just because you are transferring schools does not mean you are a “new recipient.” You are a renewal just like the rest of us.

As for Pell grants, congress recently changed the limit from 18 semesters of Pell grant to 12 semesters. (2 semesters = 3 quarters) If you received a supplemental pell grant in the summer semester last year, that also counts as 1 semester. ( These supplemental pell grants were voted out by congress also.)

PS - I’m surprised a lot of you used your cal grants already. I don’t know about you guys but when we’re dealing with this much money, I definitely did my research and planned out my future usage. Since I planned to stay at UC for 3 years, I put my cal grant on hold the first year of CCC. The next year I accepted the $1,551 at CCC and will be using the last 3 years for my UC. Comparing the $1,551 at CCC to 12k+ at UC, you should be able to decide… I guess you will have to learn how to plan for the future the hard way.

^ Also it’s based on your standing isn’t it?

Regardless, if we won’t receive cal grant anymore, let’s say the last year at UC, blue and gold will cover everything right? assuming your financial income is super low… right?

@CosmicBubble No. Blue & Gold and Cal grant go hand in hand. If you look at the requirements for Blue & Gold, it states that the student must be in his/her first 4 years in college. To qualify for blue and gold, you need to qualify for cal grant. (not necessarily in terms of financial need, but in terms of usage.)

Yes it is based off your standing, but standing doesn’t matter once you’ve exhausted all 4 years of your cal grant/blue & gold.

To make things simple, transfers only get two years of blue and gold.

@rDPurpleHaze So I put mine on reserve while at my CCC. I’m a one-year transfer thats transferring next Fall. Do I have a Cal Grant for 4 years then?

I was awarded Cal Grant B as well.

rpd

are you sure??? I plan to say at UC for 3 years once i transfer. I will have two more years of cal grant left. So the last year I won’t get cal grant. How will financial aid cover my tuition?! omg

@cosmic bubbles

I’m in the same situation…
However what scares me more is that I will continue to receive cal grant B at the UC? That’s only 1551 dollars!! How would that even help pay for anything! That’s more like a one months rent at the village -___-

I am screwed.

I don’t think that’s how it works - if you’ve never been in a 4 year college before and never had a cal grant before, you’ll get 2 years worth when you transfer.
