So for the calgrant entitlement award it says that you just have to apply within one year after graduating high school. If I graduated from high school last year (June 2011) and applied in march 2012 (this year), is that within one year? Would I still be eligible for the entitlement award or the competitive award if I am currently attending college as a freshman?

You ‘apply’ every year by completing your FAFSA on time, so I think you should be fine. The other thing you had to do on time was ask your high school to send in the GPA verification form. If you did both of those on time, you can look at the Cal Grant web site to see your status: <a href=“CSAC - Student Landing Home”>CSAC - Student Landing Home;
Are you saying that you didn’t complete the FAFSA last year? Usually, the high school sends in the GPA form for you when you are a senior. Since I didn’t receive a cal grant as a freshman, I had to print out a GPA form and take it to my high school to send in again for my sophomore year. Once you actually get a cal grant, they will use your college grades and you don’t have to do that form anymore.

Thanks for your reply, that was really helpful.
I have another question though. I didn’t receive it when I applied last year (my senior year), so I applied again this year. I only submitted my college GPA and did not submit my high school GPA this year, did that just disqualify me, or will they take the college GPA I submitted for the entitlement award?

hmmm - did you check the web grant page? It will say if they have the GPA form or not. If it shows your gpa, then don’t worry about it. It should also show where it
was submitted from.
I can’t seem to find the directions that I used last year that said I needed the high school to send in the gpa form. I did find this ‘late gpa form’ http://www.csac.ca.gov/pubs/forms/grnt_frm/lategpaform.pdf which
- needs to be submitted by May 16
- looks like it says where you are enrolled for Spring 2012 - so that would
be your current college (so maybe you are good to go)

If you think you will be eligible this year and your gpa isn’t showing up, you
may want to call CalGrant directly and try to get a definite answer. It is a large
sum of money, so would be worth your time. on this page:

okay, thank you so much for your help!
