Cal Poly 2014 Transfers and beyond

Hey guys, Im applying for cal poly for fall 2014 and I just thought Id make a thread for anyone else who is currently in the process of getting GPA up, credits fulfilled and just plain plan on transferring to CPP in the upcoming years. I mean its a little over a year away but shoot, why not keep each other updated on progress and keep the motivation flowing! Im majoring in Business Administration, currently working on getting my AS-T to help my chances  I’d love to get to know my future Cal Poly student body, who knows, maybe we’ll run into each other one day haha! What are your majors, gpa, future goals? Discuss anything cal poly related and lets start talkin

dont be shy just make a reply lol

Nice to meet another fall 2014 hopeful! I’ll be applying as a mechanical engineering transfer (hopefully with all prereqs and GEs completed). My situation is a little tricky because I just finished my first year of college at a four year university in Northern California, but am now going to attend a community college to up my chances at transferring into a CSU. However because I only have a year now before I transfer, I need to cram a lot of my classes this year! I actually only intend to apply to CP Pomona to transfer because I want to be a theme park designer/engineer when I graduate, and I figured Pomona is the way to go with its close proximity to Disneyland and Universal Studios, as well as better networking opportunities than if I continued my education in Norcal. Pomona also happens to be the only school I’m interested in that only asks for two physics courses, whereas every other school asks for three (which I cant do because of registration and class sizes). My cumulative GPA is a 3.7 right now, but Im sure some of my classes won’t transfer.

Wow sounds like you’ve got quite a path set up for yourself. I’m sure your counselor will know if all if your classes will transfer. What university do you go to?
I’m sure you’ll have no problem transferring in with your GPA, especially if it all goes smoothly with credits.
Have you visited CPP?

@tobyornottobyxd I totally get how u have to cram. Up until last semester I was never a big school kid. I’m just catching up with life now and I’m taking classes like crazy. 16 credits this semester :stuck_out_tongue: handled it alright but still struggling. Got a full schedule every semester in order to transfer on time haha

I attended the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo. I originally went there to pursue a US Coast Guard aviation career there, but they cut the program this year…
My problem is getting the classes I need to transfer! Even though I did a heavy course load this past year (20 Units Fall/18 Units Spring), my counselor said only about 22-25 of them will transfer, so now I’m geared for 20 units this upcoming Fall semester and 23 in Spring to get my prereqs and CSU-GE done! It’s going to be a really busy year for me. If only engineering wasn’t so strict on completing prereqs haha
As for visiting CPP, I have not yet, but I am planning on visiting over the summer when my family makes our annual trip to Socal for vacation. Have you visited yet?

Oh wow! That is a crazy work load indeed. Why don’t u take a couple In the summer? Cut down on fall and spring that way. My next two semester are around 16-18 credits but I might take a class or two in the summer so I can put more time in studying so I can get A’s you know?
Yea I went and took a tour like two months. It’s literally a 2 minute drive from my house haha the campus is really nice. It’s not soo big that it’ll take you 30 min to walk to each class but it’s a good size to give you that university feel. They’re engineering program is really good and I think they either built a new building or redesigned/remodeled an existing building. Everyone seemed friendly enough but we didn’t really stop to talk to many of them. Can’t wait to get there!

The tally of 20 and 23 units already include taking summer courses already unfortunately. But yeah, thats definitely a good idea to give you the best opportunity to maximize your GPA!
The bigger campus will be something to look forward to. My previous college was a student body of about 1300 students and it took literally three minutes to walk across the entire campus. My biggest class size was a whopping 24 students haha. Im a bit concerned about dorming since Im from Norcal and the fact that many (and most llikely including you) commute to this school, but that’s probably what I’ll be most focused on when I tour the campus, the dorming situation.
Since you are a Pomona local, I was wondering if there is any activity outside of the campus? Is it very active? Dangerous? Stuff to do?

Yeah there’s quite a bit to do if you have the time. Pomona itself, some parts, ehh you might wanna steer clear lol but overall the city itself is not too bad. If you drive like 5-10 min and go to downtown Fullerton, the nightlife and bar scene there is always lively and pretty fun! About 20-25 min south you could go to Disneyland. 15 min more south and you’ll hit the beaches like Laguna and Newport. Los Angeles is like a 25-30 minute drive. Although to me there’s not really too much going on unless you want to go to the club or something. Other than that I feel like it’s more of a tourists/ sight seeing city. I hear two sides for the campus itself. Some say it’s dead on the weekend but others say if you know people in the right dorms you’ll always have a party.

Yea I myself will be commuting because I literally live 2 minutes driving time over in The next city lol. I mean as much as I’d love to be out of the house and in a dorm or something i just don’t have the extra money to shell out for an apartment. I’m working on it haha. Yea but if you do live on campus I think they just built some new residence halls and there’s another section that’s kinda on campus but kind of off called The Village. I think it’s like apartment style lying cause you pay monthly for it but it’s run by the school so you have to follow certain rules and stuff. Should be nice.

Hi I wanted to know whether there is an academic update to the transfer undergrad application to cal states? Under the section of the application where it says, “Planned courses before transferring,” what if I were to not get enrolled in one of those classes or drop one of them?

I actually don’t think there is an update until you send in your final transcripts after your last semester. That’s where they see if you completed all of your courses and then I think make the final decision. If you don’t complete the classes you said you would depending on the GPA and such it may affect your chances if acceptance. Again not 100% sure

Hey guys, my statuses changed from “Prov Admit” to “UGRD Clear After Prov. Admit”. I was wondering if you guys know the difference between those two statuses?

@Tehjoadsta thanks for helping out. You go to CPP already?

yeah, i’ve been there a year in college of business administration - CIS major.

Oh awesome. Did you transfer in? And if you did what was your GPA? I’m going to be trying to transfer in for business as well but in Finance, Law and Real Estate

yeah, I was a transfer student from Fullerton College. I had a 2.4 GPA when I transferred. CIS only has like 200 applicants though.

Good lucky with getting into FRL.

Thanks! How are you liking the campus and how are the other business students? Tight knit like engineering? Haha

I like the campus a lot. The new business building is really awesome. Students in every other college hate us for it. CIS department is really small (only a few hundred), so we all know each other pretty much.
