Cal Poly 2014 Transfers and beyond

I’m a CIS major hoping to transfer in during the fall of 2014. Currently have a 3.8 GPA (but it will drop to a 3.5 or 3.4 from this hectic semester).

@tehjoadsta How is the CIS program there? I heard it’s a male-dominated major.

That’s awesome. 3.5 is still good seeing as you still have two semesters to bring it up! Haha are you going to be commuting?

@Pavingapath These next 2 semesters should be better, I hope. Do they count the GPA from your first year or all 2 years? I’m planning to go for the suites/village. It would be too much to commute from Burbank to Cal Poly in a day.

@xxcapital: the CIS program IS a male-dominated major. You’re lucky to get 1-2 females in any CIS class (aside from the classes that are required for all business students). And well, they usually aren’t even somewhat attractive. Some classes are really tough, so be sure to research your professors beforehand. Offhand, I’d tell you to avoid taking Curl, Ma, and Preiser for CIS classes.

Balance your load with general business classes and your general ed and you’ll do well.

@xxcapital that is very true haha the drive would not be a pretty one. I’m lucky enough to live down the street. Both years I would assume, whatever courses you have on the transcript that you send them that totals your GPA and credits

I was up there last month and saw the construction going on for the new rec center. Looks like they plan to have it completed by fall 2014. Looks like it will be very cool when completed

The dorms look kinda crappy from the outside. Are they just as bad on the inside?

Is there housing students live in near this college? If so where?

After first year where do students live?

Sent from my HTC One SV using Tapatalk 2

@tehjoadsta Wow. Then again, a lot of computer-field majors are male dominated. Well… I’m a female with CIS being my main choice of major. By the time I transfer, I should be done with half/most of the business courses. I will definitely keep note about staying away from those 3 as much as I can. Do you know anything about Manson? I met him several times before and he seems decent from the outside…

@Pavingpath You’re definitely lucky indeed! I thought they would only count the first year considering how you apply during the fall and they make their decisions based on what they have.

Well when you apply in November, you’ll be in the middle of fall semester so they won’t have your current courses and credits. You send them all the credits/courses you have thus far and put down what classes you’re going to be taking and at the end of the semester you send in final transcripts

@xxcapital: there’s quite a few business courses in upper division that you need to take as well as 3 upper division general ed courses. It will fill up you course load pretty easily.

I don’t know anything about Manson myself as I’ve never had to take him for anything. I hear he’s alright though.

Definitely make sure to send in all your transcripts after you’re done taking your courses unless you feel like repeating those classes at cal poly for no reason.

Thank you, Pavingapath & tehjoadsta for the info about the transcripts. I will definitely send them in when I’m finished with my courses for the semester and whatnot. :)!!! As long as these courses don’t involve calculus 2 or higher, I should be fine, lol >_<

@xxcapital haha no problem and good luck. Don’t overload on courses because if you need them and don’t get the grade you want it could put you behind, like me :stuck_out_tongue: lol have to retake a class this summer grrr haha cant wait to get to CPP

@taddyangle I went on a campus tour a little bit ago. We went into a dorm that was close to the actual cafeteria. I’m not sure what the building was called. The building i was in, As you know each floor is either male or female. The room we visited was small, a regular sized room, 2 beds. I think it was an older dorm and it was where the freshman stay.
Some people stay on campus their sophomore year but a lot of people either move off campus to an apartment near the campus or into the village or other housing option controlled through the school
I think they just built new suites for upper class men though if they chose to stay on campus. I’d love to stay in those if I were going to stay on campus. Meet new cool people

@ tehjoadsta the link doesn’t work, can you send me a working link? Thanks for the reply btw.

@vu3141: if you just google “provisional admit”, it will show up. that’s what I did. It has a list of all application statuses and what they mean (its a csupomona link)

Hello, mind if I join this discussion??
I am currently at community college and will be applying to cal poly pomona for their winter 2014 quarter ( they will be taking apps from upper division transfer and for “NON IMPACTED PROGRAMS ONLY”) as a Computer Science major. Any pomona cs majors here? I have been a little worried they might not accept me tho :frowning: . At first when I started attending community college I declared as an engineering major but youngster me ( fresh out of high school) still had the “fun fun fun” mentality and didn’t quite work very hard. I wasted a lot of time and would drop classes left and right. Any way, I have switched my major to cs since then, and apparently it is not an impacted major at pomona THANK GOD! My GPA isnt the “worst” GPA out there but I could have done ALOT better. Right now I have a transferable GPA of 3.07 which includes all appropriate GE as well as required cs courses (calc1,2 and 3, physics, linear algebra etc…). What worries me the most is the large number of courses I have dropped in my time as a college student. I have a total of ( and please don’t laugh/ be harsh) 12 W’s on my transcript. As I mentioned earlier most of these are from my early days when I did not take college seriously. Do you guys/ gals think I still have a shot for admission to the cs program?? I mean, my GPA isnt that bad, but its those 12 W’s that worry me ALOT :frowning: (Does pomona just look at your GPA to determine admission or do they consider other factors??) . Please, dont be afraid to keep it real and tell me the honest truth. Also, like Pavingapath mentioned, I too will be receiving an AS-T degree in mathematics. Do you think this degree will increase my chance to of getting in more? I really hope I have a shot to get in, I take my education WAYYYYYY more serously now and I have no doubt in my mind I have what it takes to major in cs. Hope to hear some replies
ps: sorry for writing so much

I think the AS-T will help your chances a bit but the 12 W’s, hmmm idk that’s a tough one. Idk how they look at that kind of stuff. I used to live in Chicago and I know universities there frowned upon too many W’s. I’m not sure about here. Either way good luck on your application. Hope you get in. Try getting your GPA up a little higher. Who knows maybe they won’t even look at it haha

Hey Pavingapath, thanks alot for your responce! Yea, those 12 W’s are the only thing that worry me ALOT. From what I hear their cs dept is not impacted at all, however its still a cal poly and its a bit more selective than the rest of the csu’s. I actually got an A in my CS1 class so maybe that will show them I can do well in cs. Im seeing a counselor on the 24th to review my application and make sure I filled it properly. Guess I have to keep my fingers crossed on this one. :(

@comsce89 hey I’m going to be a CS major (FTF) and I just got an email saying that there has been increased enrollment in the CS major. Just thought I should let you know :o good luck on getting in though!

@vince5260. Hey thanks for replying to my post! Will you be a cs major at cal poly pomona? If you are, were you sent that email by pomonas admission/ cs department?? Everywhere I check, and even on forums like this one people say that it isnt that difficult to get into cal poly pomona for cs and it is not impacted. I think my gpa (3.07) should be ok as far as required gpa is concerned. Like I said, what worries me the most is the 12 W’s on my transcript.I have a feeling they might reject me for that :frowning: , but it doesnt hurt to try. I have an appointment with a counselor soon to review my app and make sure I filled it out correctly. She will give me her opinion.

Comsce89, most of the time CC counselors have no idea what they’re talking about. So take their opinion with a grain of salt. A friend of mine had like a 2.7 GPA and was still able to get accepted to CSUN/CSU Fresno. The counselor flat-out told him he’d never get into any college with that GPA and should just give up on engineering. He’s acing all his classes now as an ME. I don’t know if that means anything coming from CSUN (I think they have a strong engineering department, idk), but he’s doing well now at least.

I don’t think you’ll have any problems as long as you have your golden four completed and maybe bring it to a 3.1+.

Does anyone know when we’re supposed to find out if we got housing or whatever? I’m still waiting for an e-mail that says whether I got a spot for the suites or not.
