Cal Poly for Comp Sci? Am I a good fit? If not what's a better school?

I’m new to this so I apologise in advance for my ignorance.
I’m a senior in high school and am really interested in Comp Sci as a degree. I was originally thinking SJSU, but I’ve read that some students can’t even graduate on time because of how impacted it is. Is it the same for Cal Poly? If so who knows of any good colleges for a comp sci degree. Please base your recommendations off my grades and SAT score (which is really bad). I’m also not rich so Private schools are… well… ya know.

9-11: (W) 3.7941 (UW) 3.6765
10-11: (W) 3.9167 (UW) 3.75
SAT Score: 1230 :frowning:

Thanks in advance and again I apologise if this is not what this website is usually used for.

Which Cal Poly? Pomona or SLO?

CS at SLO has about a 10% acceptance rate and your GPA and test scores are well below the averages so a Reach school.
Average GPA: 4.16 and SAT: 1467

For CPP, your test scores and GPA are within range but CS again is very competitive and many applicants with your stats last year were waitlisted or denied.

SJSU also has a very competitive CS program and your stats would put your chances as low.

I suggest you consider: CSU Fullerton, SJSU (Software Engineering instead of CS), Long Beach State, Chico State, San Francisco State, East Bay as some possible Match and safety schools.

Thank You! I appreciate your answer. However, because I am a resident of CA I get an automatic 0.2 boost to my GPA for SJSU. (I’m not sure if that’s the case for Cal Poly… no one is giving me a straight answer  ) So for SJSU my GPA becomes 4.1. and that would actually make me eligible for Comp Sci. They use a formula --> GPA * 800 + SAT Score to test your eligibility for impacted majors.
The minimum number to be eligible for Comp Sci for SJSU is 4500 which I just exceed using a 4.1 GPA. I’m wondering how CAL POLY does this and if you would have any info on that I’d greatly appreciate it. If not thanks anyway!

I think SLO is probably not going to happen - but, admission threshold for both varies year to year so you should certainly apply. SJSU seems to get tougher and tougher (for CS in particular) each year. If you want a residential campus, SDSU and Chico would be prime ,targets, if you are looking for more of a commuter experience, CPP, CSULB, Fullertion, SF Sac and EB should top your list. Each has a very reputable CS program with strong ties to employers.

Good luck.

Not sure where you are getting the 0.2 boost on your GPA as a resident. Usually only local applicants (in the local service area) are given priority meaning they can get an acceptance with a lower EI threshold than out of area applicants.
Cal Poly gives priority to local in-service area applicants like all CSU’s but I do not know of any CSU that gives a GPA boost.

I know transfer applicants with AAT or AST degrees will get a GPA boost for their local CSU but I have not seen this in the case of Freshman.

Here is the info regarding GPA boost for Transfers:
The AA-T/AS-T degree DOES NOT guarantee admission to a SPECIFIC CSU or major, ONLY to the CSU system. Transfer associate (AA/AS-T) degree applicants are guaranteed priority admission over all other transfer students when applying to a local or non-impacted campus. So, all they need to complete is the minimum CSU Admission Requirements to get in (i.e. 2.0 transfer G.P.A., 30 CSU transferrable units, Speech, English, Critical Thinking, and Math Completed, etc.) Students applying to an impacted major get a G.P.A. increase of .10. Students applying to an impacted program at a non-impacted campus, get a G.P.A. increase of a .20. Students should check out the Cal State website for updated list of impacted campuses and programs at http://calstate.edu/sas/impactioninfo.shtml.
