Cal Poly GPA - Max?

This has probably been covered before, but I couldn’t find by searching. Numerous threads here have people posting their “Cal Poly GPA” or “CSU GPA” with numbers like 4.3, 4.4, etc. I understand that CalPoly caps it at 4.2. Even so, if you use the CSU/CP criteria, you can only use 8AP classes. You also include your freshman grades. For most students, taking 6 classes, this results in 36 semester grades, only 8 of which can be worth 5 points for an A. The max GPA under this scenario is 4.22. Where are people getting these really high CSU/CP GPA’s? Or am I missing something?

Maximum GPA for SLO is 4.2 but you can have higher, it is just capped. Higher GPA’s posted by applicants on these threads are probably their UC GPA which is capped out at 4.4 (rounded) or their uncapped GPA which UCLA/UCB uses which includes unlimited AP/IB classes.

Anything 4.2 and above counts as a 4.2 in the algorithm. My son had a 4.32 Cal Poly calculated GPA. It can go even a little bit higher. Remember classes that aren’t a-g don’t count, so students could have less than 36 semester grades. The less they have, the less diluted the AP/honors impact is.
