I’m considering Cal Poly SLO for my D but I’m having trouble figuring out what our COA would be from their website. It talks about an additional tuition of $248 per unit OOS but I can’t find anyplace that tells me how many units a student would take in a year. I started assuming 12 units per term - is that a quarter? So that would be 12 units$2483 quarters= 8928 tuition plus 7419 fees (using 2011 figures) for a grand total of $16,347 plus living expenses, OOS.
But someplace else implies that if one were to take say 15 units/credits, which would be common for an engineering major, that would mean higher tuition cost of $18,579. Is this correct?
I’m trying to figure out how much financial damage this could cause us if she applies. If it’s too much, we won’t bother.

Your math looks correct. Nevertheless, the best thing to do is call the Financial Aid department. 9 a.m. to noon & 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (closed 12-1) PST Monday - Thursday; 805.756.2927; No telephones on Friday. They are always helpful.

Cal Poly SLO is an excellent school. However, expect tuition to increase over the next few years as state assistance has dropped 33% and the school just announced another $20,000,000 anticipated cut from Gov. Brown. The school will be fine as it is supported by industry and alumni in a big way. But expect costs to rise. Even with increases, it is still an affordable school that provides a “private” level education at “public” costs.

Also, if you go to the web site, majors have flow charts that show how many credits are needed for graduation. Here’s an example from civil engineering.

http://ceenve.calpoly.edu/media/files/ce-flowchart-2009-2011.pdf

Civil engineering requires 196 credits which averages 49/year, so your 12 and 15 units are both low.

I agree with OsakaDad - excellent school and tuition will increase. But, I notice you’re from Colorado - me, too - and we know tuition at our state schools is going to increase as well.

We’re from OOS as well. We have also consulted the AP credit award table to see if the flowchart for our D’s major can be made more manageable/affordable. At 204 credits, graduation in 4 years seems almost impossible. I believe Mech Eng. has only a 12% 4-year graduation rate. Five years of OOS tuition is a bummer.
