I was accepted to both Cal Poly and Fordham, but I’m not sure which to attend. I live in southern California, so Cal Poly is definitely more affordable.

I’ll be a philosophy major, so I’m concerned about going to Cal Poly since their specialty is engineering.

We had a similar dilemma but on the opposite coast…trying to pick between UF (basically zero $$ thanks to prepay and a scholarship) and Cal Poly ($30K + higher expenses/travel costs). My daughter picked Cal Poly for 2 reasons: she’s an engineering major (UF is the only really good public U here and its engineering program isn’t that strong, with nothing in her specific software engineering interest) and she absolutely loved the campus, the kids she met there, and SLO as a whole.

We whittled things down by literally writing up multiple Pros and Cons lists for each school and then focusing on the real deal breakers. In the end it was less about money and more about the out of state experience and the fact that the tech career/intern opps in Fla are slim to none in comparison.

for Philosophy, I’d lean toward Fordham. The Jesuits have been teaching Philosophy to great effect for centuries. I once had the pleasure of dining with Raul Julia, the acclaimed actor. He waxed on profusely about how much he valued his grade school Jesuit education in Puerto Rico, and how it shaped his proclivities toward charity and openness to all people.

Well both are very good schools, so either way you’ll make a good choice. They are very different though. East coast vs. West, New York city vs. college town slo. Cal Poly is better known for programs such as engineering, however the philosophy professors are quite good still. Going out of state for school is a very good experience though, in my opinion, if you can afford it.
