Cal Poly Pomona Class of 2023 - Applicant Thread

@hopefuldadinoc: In past years, I have seen some movement on the waitlist as students decline their acceptance for the other schools once the UC’s and CSU’s have completed their decisions. Generally, most waitlisted students have to wait until after May 1, but you never know.

@hopefuldadinoc My son applied for CS last year at 16 schools and we carefully chose a non-impacted alternate major with easier admissions at each school. He was waitlisted by 3 schools (didn’t get admitted by any waitlist schools) and rejected by 4 schools. What was surprising to us was that not one school offered an alternative major.

His friends with lower stats were getting admitted for less competitive majors, but it was CS or bust at every school. We have seen similar results with others students applying to impacted majors like CS and engineering. It seems that few students get the opportunity to get considered for an alternative major at competitive schools/programs.

Thanks @ForumGuy. I wish I had known this last year. We may have made a HUGE mistake. Can I ask, was one of those schools your son was waitlisted for CPP? And if so, would you mind sharing his stats?

Does Cal Poly Pomona send out an official admission packet and letter as we haven’t received any physical mail from them? Son did get a postcard for admit day at SJSU.

I would like to see CPP’s stats for admission of students into impacted majors from districts with local agreements.

has anyone been accepted or denied as a sociology major ?

@hopefuldadinoc @Forumguy: Only 2 Cal states claim they consider alternate majors in their application review which are CPP and SJSU. They also state they will consider the alternate major if there is additional spots available.

Several UC’s also consider alternate majors, but as stated by @ForumGuy, the alternate major needs to be in a non-impacted/non-capped major (usually nothing within the College of Engineering).

Hard lessons to learn and my son was one of those applicants where it was CS major or nothing so that did limit where he ended up applying.

@eddieboysr: Are you referring to CSU local preference?

@Gumbymom I am referring to https://www.cpp.edu/~admissions/intl/local-area.shtml

We are part of the Chaffey joint.

@eddieboyer: My son’s HS is also part of the local service area. I do know some local applicants are denied from CPP but they also applied to an impacted major. As far as I have been able to determine, CSU’s do not list specific stat information for local service area students. CPP is pretty vague about “local preference”.

CSULB does state that local students meeting the minimum EI that are not admitted into their choice major will be admitted as Undeclared. SJSU gives local applicants a 0.2 GPA bump but they also do not publish separate EI data for locals vs. non-locals. Many CSU’s do post minimum EI’s for non-locals out of the service area as guidelines.

CPP Statistical data from last year has an average CSU GPA at 3.51, Average SAT of 1142 and Average ACT of 23 which puts the EI’s at 3950 SAT and 932 for ACT. Seeing the many rejections with high EI’s this year, I am sure the stats will only increase.

SAT:1250
ACT:n/a
GPA:3.4
Local
Gender: Female

Major: Business Administration emphasis- International
Applied date: November 25
Decision date: March 5
Decision: Accepted

@Gumbymom … I was wondering if you knew the cal poly pomona waitlist stats by any chance. I’m on waitlist for aerospace engineering and my EI is 4448. Thanks!

@Rdhun01: Unfortunately, CPP does not report their waitlist stats on the Common dataset and am I not aware of any other place the data would be listed.

@Rdhun01 waitlisted? Same here, bummed but not giving up HOPE!!

Hi @prevetviolet! Good for you! My daughter is looking into this field of study as well!

My daughter has been waitlisted, but we are still hopeful! Best of luck to everyone in the same situation!

@turotheburro yea… hopefully we move up the waitlist and maybe even get in!

@Gumbymom do you maybe know the average stats for Aerospace Engineering majors at CPP?

@Rdhun01: CPP does not publish stats by major only by the campus as a whole.

Does anyone understand how WUE works? I have been admitted and emailed the financial aid office asking for more info. I was told that if WUE was granted, I would know by May 1. I am accepted at several other schools and am getting nervous about the approaching deadlines to make a decision. I did receive a note from CPP saying that my financial aid package was available. I checked the portal and there was no WUE offer :frowning: Is it possible that it might be coming at a later date? I have not accepted any offers yet and am nervous that I am running out of time…

So the admissions office told me something different than what was indicated on my son’s waitlist letter. The waitlist letter says “Your academic background and potential for success at Cal Poly Pomona qualified you for a place on our waitlist. This is significant, as you could still be offered admission, should space in our Fall Semester 2019 class become available.” This indication of “space availability” tells me they wouldn’t be going to the waitlist until either after May 1, when acceptances are due, or if others declined their spots earlier. The admissions office told me however that being put on the waitlist doesn’t necessarily mean the enrollment for that major is full, but that they are simply taking more time to make a decision, and that they could potentially start making offers to the waitlist as early as next week. So are they just snowing me, or is there some truth to this? Does anyone know?
