Cal Poly Pomona Class of 2023 - Applicant Thread

I am SO confused. I got waitlisted for Architecture, in-state.

I had a 1460 SAT, a 3.6W GPA, max class-loads. My MCA was ~4370. I’m shocked.

@aVeryHappyChild

Pomona doesn’t use MCA. They use EI which is GPA and SAT only.

Calculate it using this “formula”

(GPA*800)+SAT

Yours would be 4340.

Mine was 4870 so you have a decent chance, I think.

I had an MCA of 4335 by comparison. Also In-state. Not in the Pomona service area.

I’m very confused about my waitlisting. Applying for CompSci, ACT 34, GPA 3.72, EI 4530.

Hi so I also got the message saying “denied cpp redirect” my SAT score is not that competitive with a 1070 and a gpa of 3.5 I applied for mechanical engineering and I guess the only thing that makes me somewhat stand out is my 4 in my AP Calc AB class. Can you explain what you mean by a major being impacted. And when it’s says redirect is there a potential chance of just being waitlisted or is it confirmed that you’re not going to CPP and while have to chose another cal state in April. -Thanks
I truly do hope I make it to cal poly Pomona though it would be a dream and blessing come true.

@scream9741: Impacted means that there are more qualified applicants than spots available and impacted majors require higher stats and have higher admission requirements.

Redirection means that you are denied by CPP but will redirect you to another CSU campus that has spots available.

Redirection occurs after all campuses report their admission decisions for a given semester to Cal State Apply. For fall admission, this will be after April 1.

Eligible applicants who have not been admitted to any CSU campus(es) to which they applied because of a lack of capacity are then identified. Each student will then be contacted by email; the email will include instructions. When you receive the email, you will need to go to Cal State Apply and select a first- and a second-choice campus. Available alternate campuses are based on campus capacity.

After you have identified a first- and a second-choice campus, your application to the CSU will be redirected to your first-choice campus unless that campus has run out of capacity. To ensure your application is redirected to your first-choice campus, respond to the email as quickly as possible.

You will be sent a notification by email confirming the redirection.

The campus you’ve been redirected to will appear in your Cal State Apply account on the “Check Status” page. You will next be contacted by the redirected campus about the next steps in the process.

@enoxys: It means that the applicants accepted to CPP for CS had a higher EI, so you are competitive but have been waitlisted. You can accept the waitlist and hope spots open up but in the meantime you need to enroll in another school by May 1.

I got accepted for architecture on 3/14 by checking my portal but I haven’t received an email confirming it yet. Will I get an email soon or is it all through portal?

I got my email before I got a portal update back in February. Check your spam folder. Congrats on getting accepted!! We’re both going to be in Architecture ?

@Daphneblue

Disaster!! After waiting on hold for almost 45 min this morning, the admissions dept told me my son was waitlisted for CS (his first choice major) and that admission decisions had already been sent out for his second choice (CIS). They told me they could not admit him for CIS. So what’s the point? CPP’s own website says that second choice majors will be considered if you don’t get into your first choice. They even encourage you to pick a non-impacted second choice if your 1st choice is impacted (which is the case here, CS impacted, CIS non-impacted). So what went wrong here? They wouldn’t let me speak to a counselor, saying I have to make an appointment online. I did that, but it seems to be for denials, and I had to choose a denial reason that’s not correct, so I’m not sure if I’ll even get a call back. My son would accept CIS today if admitted, and his stats should have allowed him to be admitted (EI 4464). Any suggestions anyone?

@hopefuldadinoc: So sorry to hear about this problem. I cannot offer you any suggestions other than to be a squeaky wheel and keep pestering them until you get an answer of why he was not considered for the 2nd choice major. Hopefully they will have spots open up for CIS before the May 1 SIR date.

Yes, call back and hopefully someone more helpful will assist you.

I got waitlist for CS too :frowning: EI 4490

I didn’t expect that

@ooooooofoooof are you local?

yeah man @eddieboysr

Called back, got someone more helpful, but still got the same answer. They can’t switch him to CIS. He must accept the waitlist and see if he either gets accepted or rejected for CS. And if he’s rejected, they can’t even guarantee he’ll then be considered for CIS. Ugh.

@ooooooofoooof By any chance did you list a second choice major?

@Gumbymom Thanks, but he’s stuck on the waitlist for CS and they won’t let him change to CIS. So even if spots open up in CIS (or if there are spots now, they won’t tell me), they won’t give it to him, or consider him until he’s rejected for CS. And by that time, it may be too late. Don’t know how things are on the CIS side (if they are full or not or will be later).

@hopefuldadinoc: I understand your frustration unfortunately nothing new for CPP and several of the other CSU’s. Hopefully there will be some movement on the waitlist once all the rest of the Freshman admits for the UC’s and the rest of the CSU’s are completed by April 1??

Thanks @Gumbymom you’ve always had an encouraging word on this forum and I appreciate it! But… why would there be movement on the waitlist after April 1? Wouldn’t CPP just wait until after the actual acceptances are due May 1 before they start working down the waitlist? Or are you saying as people get accepted to UCs and other places they might give up their spot at CPP early and CPP would fill right away and not wait until May? Do you know if CPP has done this in the past?
