**Cal Poly Pomona Class of 2025 Decisions**

Denied (Redirected)
Major: Computer Science
In state
CSU GPA: 3.85
Grades 9-11: 4 AP/Honors Courses
Grade 12: 2 AP Courses

Likely Reasons for Decision:
*CS is a very impacted major at CPP
*My freshman year grades were not strong and I believe both Cal Poly Slo and Pomona consider them in decision making
*Not enough AP/Honors Courses

Sorry to hear. It will be interesting to see to where people get re-directed. I did not previously know this was a thing.

When did you get this decision?

A couple of hours ago.

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Alternate Major: Manufacturing Engineering
In state, not in service area
CSU GPA: 3.6
Grades 9-11: AP Biology (5), AP Calculus (4)
Grade 12: APCS, AP Stats, AP Physics C

@UserOfThisToxic:
Cal Poly SLO uses 9-11th grades in their CSU GPA calculation. Cal Poly Pomona does not but since test scores were not a consideration in their application review they did consider the following:
Academic grade point average in all completed math courses, including math and quantitative reasoning (approved Area C- Math and Area G-College prep electives) courses taken.

Having additional Math courses above the minimum requirements (Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2) along with good grades in Freshman year Math courses were considered this year.

Congratulations! You sound very much like my son. I hope thatā€™s a good sign for him.

Not going to list all the stats here b/c my son was denied. He isnā€™t a 4.0++ students but he is a good student at a top ranked and very rigorous high school taking many APs. Per everything we read and our in-the-know college counselor, CPP looked like a solid target school. He received a rejection email on Friday. His dream school is CP SLO, which we knew was a stretch but now I have to assume is unattainable if CPP said no. Is there any scenario where CPP says no and SLO says yes?

Side question ā€“ is Cal State admissions this year just a gpa competition since they donā€™t have anything else to go by?

CSU campuses may have additional criteria added to their point systems. For example CPP lists the following:

https://www.cpp.edu/admissions/freshmen/requirements.shtml

However, unlike some other campuses like SJSU, CPP does not disclose how these additional criteria are combined with GPA to get an admissions index.

SLO has their own point system, which includes among other things, ECā€™s and leadership in ECā€™s.

I donā€™t remember anything on the app that was specific to SLO. Wasnā€™t it the same app for both CP Pomona and SLO, and other CSs? I remember him feeling disappointed that his robotics experience and his work werenā€™t going to be seen.

There was a place on the app for amount of time spent on ECā€™s and whether or not you had any leadership in those ECā€™s, and whether those ECā€™s were related to your major, IIRC. SLO adds MCA points for such things.

Hereā€™s a thread about SLOā€™s assignment of points.

Yep, I do remember those. There was nothing that allowed any details. Well, weā€™ll just hold tight for the others. Bummer about CPP, though.

FWIW, my D was accepted to CPP, a few weeks back, without those perfect stats.

If you look the the MCA points (which may be different than posted for this year) for SLO, HS course rigor and some non-academic areas such as being local have large point values.

Class rigor score, worth 750 points. In this section you get zero points for meeting the minimum admission requirements and adders for more than the minimum. The bonuses in order of power are (min semesters/max total semesters/bonus per extra semester/total possible bonus): math 6/10/125/500, lab science 4/8/50/200, English 8/10/50/100, foreign language 4/8/25/100, visual performance 2/4/25/50, no bonus points for social sciences or electives. As with GPA, you can actually score higher than the maximum, but 750 is the most they will count.

Finally, work and ECs, worth 350 points. Work (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/20, 6-10/40, 11-15/60, 16-20/80, 21+/100, add 50 points if work is major related. ECs (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/30, 6-10/60, 11-15/90, 16-20/120, 21+/150, add 60 points for leadership role.

There are also other Non-Academic Bonus Points:

CA vet/701, Hayden Partner School/700, faculty/staff dependent/700, service area of CP/500, either parent with some or no HS, but who DIDNā€™T GRADUATE FROM HS/300 (per parent).

Being local gives all CSU applicants an admission bump, so unfortunately lower stat local applicants can be admitted over higher stat non-locals which is true for CPP and SLO.

Same here, S21 doesnā€™t have the most perfect GPA but so happy that he got accepted to CPP for Comp Sci! I posted his stats in like the 3rd post at the top.

Still waiting for SLO, SJSU, SDSU. But weā€™ll be very happy and almost ready to accept the CPP admission. We attended the Kellogg Honors showcase last Saturday. Looks like he will likely not apply to Kellogg, just because his AP credits and CC credits will just go to waste.

Interesting, CPP posted this article today in their facebook

Looks like the lower than average applications to CPP may possibly have been an advantage to my S21  In fairness though, he also had a ton of AP and CC courses.

Interesting, in another article that was publishe d end of last year, they said they actually had a 9% increase.

Hmmm thatā€™s really interesting. I wonder if the NYT article means they noticed the decrease before the deadline is over. And then based on the LAT article, after the deadline, they ended up with increase of 9%?

A record number of undergraduate applicants so far this year according to the school newspaper. I suspect the UCs and the top CSUs are getting more applicants during the SAT waiver year, while NorCal campuses are seeing less due to lower population densities. It should be an interesting year in college admissions.
