So, I’ve gotten accepted to Cal Poly Pomona, but let’s just say my financial aid package is lacking big time. I’m still waiting to hear back from other colleges, and this was only a safety school, but I want to make sure I can afford it if I don’t get in elsewhere. As it stands now, unless I get a lot of money in private scholarships (which I’m trying hard to do) we simply won’t be able to afford Cal Poly Pomona.
My parents suggested emailing them to explain our situation and appeal for more aid. I’m going to do it, because it can’t hurt to ask and I think I have heard of others doing that, but I want to know: How common is it that students actually get more than their initial package by asking? Would I have a good chance or is it rare? Also is there anything I should do outside of just sending an email explaining our finances and why I need more aid? Thanks

High School: I go to a private online school which has sent many students to top universities, including Ivy Leagues. This high school has a Gifted and Talented Academy for high-performing students, which I am a part of.
Income: about 60,000, but with severe medical costs, as my dad has a heart condition and my mom had two cancers.
GPA: UW - 3.93 W - 4.15 (But will go up by the end of senior year)
ACT - 35
SAT subject math 2 - 720

Is Calif your home state? If so, don’t you qualify for a cal grant? What aid was in your FA pkg.
What is your fafsa efc
If you’re not a Calif resident, then cal poly was never your safety as you can’t afford it.
Where all did you apply?
Are you a NMF?
Are you an OOS?
If you need a lot of money to attend, then this school is not affordable.
You can ask for a review and appeal, but remember that Cal Poly is a state school. They are limited because the state money just covers enough to pay the bills.
I don’t know about the appeals process or if you are a Calif resident, but from what I have heard about CA state financial aid, the awards received are comparable for all CSU’s. This means regardless of what CSU you choose, the financial aid package will be about the same. There is also the Federal Pell grant and if you are a Calif resident, you can apply separately for the Cal Grant. Some students are eligible for the State Univ Grant (SUG), but this all depends on your family’s EFC (Expected Family Contribution). Sorry if you already have all of this information Good luck
