Cal Poly Pomona or Humboldt State University

I want to major in zoology but I cannot decide which college has a better program, Cal Poly Pomona or Humboldt State University. Please help! Thank you.

Apply to both and see where you are accepted. Better to have choices. Both are very different schools in campus atmosphere so you need to figure out which school is the best fit. Science programs at CPP are more highly regarded than at Humboldt but ultimately it will come down to were you feel the most comfortable.

Gumby is right about the sciences, but specifically for the Biological Sciences I would have to say Humboldt State is nearly better (just because of the area they’re in, laboratories/observatories offered, and the options they provide). They’re both pretty equivalent in Zoology, but Humboldt is the only CSU that offers the actual degree of Zoology, whereas the rest just offer an emphasis from Zoology. The overall reputation though goes to Pomona though.

Humboldt is way less impacted and residential while Pomona is way more impacted and commuter. Humboldt is more rural, while Pomona is more urban. You need to compare these schools, I don’t think it matters where you go for Zoology between these two schools just where you are more comfortable in like Gumby says. Other CSUs that have Zoology are San Diego, Sonoma, and San Francisco. UCs if you want to look into that are UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara (only UC that offers a degree in Zoology, not emphasis), I’m not sure about privates though.

Good luck :)

I agree - no reason not to apply to both and decide later. If admitted, - tour both, one will feel more like home than other - The schools have very different feels.

Thank you, so out of Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego, San Francisco, Humboldt, and Sonoma, Cal Poly Pomona’s zoology major is most regarded?

None of them are very highly regarded. I suggest choosing the closest one.

Until you have any acceptances in hand, choosing the “best” schools is irrevelant.

If you want to go by overall rankings, then Cal Poly SLO followed by SDSU would be the top choices. If you plan to pursue Vet school, then SLO and Pomona would be your two best choices. Ultimately, it will depend upon where you are accepted and where you feel you fit in the best. You will get a good education at all the schools listed.

If you are trying to narrow down schools to apply due to cost constraints for application fees, it will depend upon your Stats. SLO and SDSU are the most competetive schools, if you have competitive Stats you would definitely want to include them on your list.
