Do I have a shot? I haven't contacted the coach yet, but I'm capable of running cross country at their school. If the coach wants me, will that help my chances?

Here is what I've found out so far: Cal Poly Pomona is one of the CSU's. So it's really easy to get into if you're at one of the high schools in their defined local area. All you have to do is be CSU eligible, and you get your acceptance notice in November. But if you're outside their local area, then you're rank-ordered and you get your notice in March or later as they fill up the entering class. Last year over 12,000 applied and about 2,000 got in so that's 17%.

what the heck... at my school cal poly is an extreme safety for even the worst students... ive heard stories of people with 3.1s and 880s admitted. the princeton review site is wrong

I'd be willing to bet your high school is in the local area for Cal Poly Pomona. Then all you have to do is get a CSU eligible combo of SAT and GPA, like 3.1 and 880 or 2.0 and 1200 or really low indexes like that. There is a list of which high schools are considered local on the Cal Poly CSU Mentor page under freshman impaction. If you aren't in one of those high schools, that's when it's really tough to get in. Because there are only a few spots left after the local kids are admitted, the rest of the applicants are admitted from the highest SAT/GPA index down until the class is filled. They only admit 2000 or so each year and it's a true 17% admission rate... and the index for the non-local kids is really high.

To horsesrock:
Sadly I live like 600 miles away. I'm in the Bay Area. What's so special about the schools in the local area? How does closeness to the school determine how well a student will suceed in college? Either I'm missing something or its a whole bunch of ******** to me.

Here's the link where it's all explained along with which high schools are considered local. I agree, it doesn't seem fair, but it's the way it is for this school.

The idea behind both the CSU and UC is to serve the educational needs of the people in its area. It's similar to out-of-state students having stricter admissions standards. BTW, I really think you'll get in.

yeah our school is local, and im sure that has to do with a lot of it, but look at the guy's stats -- they're worth a second look, at the very least.
im just curious.. what draws you to cal poly pomona?

Ive head of this. I is true that Cal-State Long Beach and San Diego State only take people from their county and you have to be really competative to get in otherwise?
