@gumbymom looking at all numbers again, wondering do you know if the AP rigor credits are only 9-11, or is there any type of credit for (at the time of app) planned APs senior year? Also, Algebra 1 in 8th grade would indicate 2 semesters of req’d math? So any math taken 10-12 would be extra points? Same for foreign language - if 4 semesters req’d, but 4 years taken, are there extra points for 11th and 12th grade semesters? Arrgh, I am a calculating fool at this point! Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. So if I got a 35 in math and a 34 in reading but low 30’s in the rest that wouldn’t affect me right?
Senior year does not count for gpa rigor bump but does for subject area number of classes bump.
Really? Because a lot of my friends have already been accepted but for bio and I was really scared for a moment that I wouldn’t be getting in. But if kinesiology majors get decisions on Tuesday than that’s a relief
@Suburbialife: For the GPA calculation, the AP credits (honors points) are for 10-11th. For HS course rigor, it would be the bonus points for taking above the minimum requirements for Math/Science/Language and Art including 12th grade courses.
Algebra and Geometry taken in middle school would count towards the Math minimum or above requirements along with any Foreign language taken in middle school. What is important on the bonus points for these courses, is the level you reach by Senior year.
I am sure many applicants had Algebra/Geometry in Middle school and were up to AP Calculus BC by Senior year Hs (12 semesters) but maximum points is for 10 semesters.
The hardest part of the MCA point calculation is the Work/EC and non-academic points. You see a lot of competitive applicants with high GPA and test scores that have not gotten a decision, while lower stat applicants have been accepted, but you do not know how much of the EC’s/Work and non-academic points contributed to the overall score.
Another observation over the past few years, is that OOS/International applicants have lower MCA scores than in-state since they are reviewed in a separate pool. Again, just an observation but hopefully @eyemgh can collect enough MCA to prove or disprove this observation.
To spell out math 6/10/125/500
Count your math semesters starting with Algebra 1. Subtract 6. Multiple by 125. Max is 500. Stats doesn’t count.
So if you took
A1
Geo
A2
Precalc
Calc
You took 10 semesters. Subrtract 6. 4x125=500
@mitsy1 It’s 940am Saturday and nothing in the portal. She’s mechanical engineer major, 32 ACT, 3.75 W. Got in U of Illinois for Electrical but $0 aid (all loans) and since we’re OOS, expensive! Cal poly is definitely the best value but had no idea it was going to b this competitive!
Can someone clarify the reading/English portion of the ACT that CP SLO uses?
Some people say English, some people say reading. They are different sections. Which one does CP SLO use?
Thanks.
It’s the reading @STEM2017
@gumbymom - thank you for the info. I think my daughter underestimated her EC hours, but overall, I hope it doesnt make that much difference. I would hope that they look at class rigor (750 for her) and the fact that she worked and did EC, so who knows. If she doesn’t get in over a 30 point spread, ah well, she is well qualified for other CSUs.
@Suburbialife: Very hard to predict not just SLO but other top CSU’s like SDSU and CSULB and even the UC’s. All I can say is that where you go for undergrad will not define you but embrace the opportunities you are given.
I have seen several posters stating they got into SLO but not SDSU or CSULB. Or posters getting into several UC’s but not some of the CSU’s.
Best of luck and it will all work out in the end.
Anyone here from Environmental Engineering?
*Hear
@noahlazer we are waiting to hear for Env Eng also. Can I ask what yr stats are? Mine are kind of the same as most of the other engineering majors that have been accepted so I am praying that they just have not got to our major yet.
@Tannison 57,000 applicants?!?!?!
Wow. Time to move on.
@gumbymom the selection process should be predictable for SLO, its supposed to be algorithmic. Given some acceptances have been of applicants with lower lower stats over others with greater stats, you have to assume that additional selections are forthcoming or sadly that the algorithmic selection process is nothing more than a guideline.
Hoping to see additional biology major acceptances soon. When you see selections with lesser stats, it is confusing and frustrating for our daughter (and us) to know how hard she has worked, how much she has accomplished to not be selected.
@dogrunner1 They’re not the best test scores for engineering - SAT 1270 ACT 25. My GPA is 4.35
@STEM2017 @socalmom007 On threads from previous years, people who contacted Cal Poly SLO admissions directly reported that they were told they used the ACT English, not the Reading.
The website says “math and critical reading” although when we were on campus they were very clear to say the ACT math and english sections (not reading or science) were what they used. https://admissions.calpoly.edu/applicants/freshman/testing.html
My son got accepted last night for Software Engineering. Not sure what his MCA is but his unweighted GPA is 4.0 and weighted GPA is 4.26 i think and SAT is 2350. Had several APs and work experience in his field if that helps anyone. Thank you to everyone that posts here. It really helps all of us that are on the edge of our seats. Good luck to everyone! Hang in there!
