Cal Poly Regular Decision Thread 2016-2017

Also, he’s in state. Forgot to mention…

I’m going off of their website which says critical reading is used.

@talguy, you seem stuck on the notion that the algorithmic process is only related to an applicant’s stats. There are other factors that a number of people have mentioned that are also a part of this process. You don’t know from looking at test scores and GPAs what rigor, extracurricular, or work related points someone has. You also don’t know about the non-academic factors like veteran status, parents’ education, local service area, or partner school. So, while it can be confusing to see someone accepted who has a lower GPA and/or test scores than your daughter, it’s not necessarily the whole story. Hopefully, she will hear soon with a positive decision.

searching through the discussion I don’t see anything, but has there been any decisions for marine biology or microbiology? I have some friends still waiting to hear for these majors

The website is referring to the SAT when it states math and critical reading.

Why would it take critical reading from one and English from the other. At any rate, I guess it doesn’t matter for me as D17 was accepted. I would have been worried by this, her English was 3 points lower than her reading.

@22cbwill I think micro came out. Marine Biology, Kinesiology, Food Science, wine and Viticulture, Theatre arts, Music, Modern Languages, and Philosophy seem to have not come out yet. Correct me if i’m wrong.

@22cbwill I know of someone in state who was accepted into Marine Bio on Thursday. It is a new major so there might not be as many people applying for it.

@noahlazer your GPA is amazing. My GPA is a bit lower than yours but my SAT is a bit higher. We will see what happens! Hoping for the best, good luck to us

Still waiting from environmental engineering… In state uc gap 4.17, act 32 or 33 depending on reading or english used.
Lots of ec and Ap classes. Surprised that cal poly is only 10 grand more for out of staters…if I attend Purdue in Indiana for engineering I will have to pay twice that amount of a Indiana resident. Still hoping for California and not giving up …

@aggro456 I have a mutual friend who was accepted for wine and vit, and I think I saw a food science acceptance within the last few days

@calirain yes, Calpoly is a great deal. Hope we all get in for Env Eng.

How hard is it to change majors at Cal Poly after one year?

Not stuck, just using the facts advocated by cal poly. You are correct “some” of those factors are not included in the MCA but they shouldn’t be so heavily weighted as to disenfranchise someone who has worked hard and long to attain the stats. The entire notion of the algorithm is to eliminate subjectivity and include those variables in the decision.

anyone get accepted today?

I wouldn’t trust every self calculated mca

As for getting angry over any one school’s decision, it is not worth it. That’s why the kid applied to 11

@talguy, I’m confused. I was saying that those factors are included in the MCA, in addition to GPA and test scores. They are still objective measures, not subjective. Are you saying that you think they should count for a different (smaller) number of points than they do? Of course, we don’t even know if Cal Poly is still using this particular version of the MCA.

Any kinesiology majors accepted?

I wonder if course rigor counts for more than the posted MCA formula indicates. My son got admitted to electrical engineering with a lower GPA than a lot of those posted here (UC capped at 3.8, fully weighted is 4.1), decent ACTS - 34M, 29E, and I estimated his MCA in the region of 4400-4500 (not sure what we used for ECs), but he will complete 14 APs by the time he is done, including both calcs, both physics C, chem, Bio, comp sci, plus two history, two english, macro econ, govt, & psych. I also wonder if the high school kids attend also weighs in somehow. I know the last couple of years ours has sent 7-8 kids to CPSLO so they probably get a good yield out of ours. I would assume they sprinkle admittances around the state, to some extent.

yes, CP superscores. Only math and english scores are used. I confirmed this with Admissions a few months ago.
