@marshmallow24 totally agree with you, just different major
@MechieTheDream I think you may have been confused by my post? I agree with you that enrollment doesn’t mean acceptance and that you can estimate an acceptance rate by using a 3X multiplier on the enrollment target. I think my example in post #1650 was clear enough?
Wow thanks so much for posting that link! @Banker1
I feel a lot better knowing that there’s only a 10% admit rate for psych. That’s less than UCLA’s admit rate lol. And I got waitlisted, so maybe there’s still hope…
From the data at the link @Banker1 posted in #1650, it’s interesting to see how far off their projections were for the number of students who actually enrolled for Computer Science last year. The target was 141 and only 102 enrolled.
You would think that would mean they would adjust their yield predictions for this year and admit more students.
Just for that major, a few others like General Engineering and MechE both had more takers than they planned. They might wait a year to adjust their yield prediction to see if it’s a trend so they don’t get a surprise overload.
I think it’s likely that they have different yield numbers per major. Or at least per school. Engineering probably has a very different yield than College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The 3x @Banker1 is probably just an estimate.
Does anyone have info/thoughts on CP’s Psychology program?
@curiositycat333 I still have a Powerpoint from several years ago that was linked to here (I think it was taken down) and it does show different yield rates for different majors like you said. For example, the column ‘Yield Rate’ had a value of 3.9 for Business Administration, 7 for Economics, and 1.59 for Industrial Technology. Those values were 3 year averages. They had different yield rates for Acadmic and Mandated (I think this is the one that includes bonus points such as child of faculty member, first gen college, etc) admissions. I’d guess what they call Yield Rate is the multiplier they use on their target number that they want to enroll.
I applied for History (Liberal Arts) and I noticed that only one acceptance has come out, which was nearly two weeks ago. Unsure what to think and getting kind of nervous. Have decisions for liberal arts ended or is it a long process?
We use 3X because Poly’s average across all majors is 33%. Since they admit by major, they will have a yield for every single major and can then develop an average for each college. I haven’t seen individual major numbers, but the last published results for the CENG were 38%.
Still haven’t received a decision for CS yet. A friend with slightly better GPA (.02 better than mine) and 1 higher on ACT was waitlisted, only difference between us is that I do a NCAA sport (hockey if important), and have done more math classes than him. Do I still have a chance to get in?
Looking at the projections : http://content-calpoly-edu.s3.amazonaws.com/ir/1/images/2017-18%20Enrollment%20Targets%20and%20Projections.pdf
In the OCOB - (business school) - last year they enrolled 95% of their numbers (34 kids additional could have been admitted across the board with BA/Econ/IT)
I will volunteer here that they should waitlist more kids to get the 100% enrollment they forecast for - with all the kids and Rents waiting here - there is NO reason they should not be 100% full when Fall term starts.
@chip78651 We are still waiting for CS result as well. That extra math might make a difference.
Portal still says “no determination”. I’m expecting S17 won’t get in. I don’t think his GPA is high enough for CS. I always considered Cal Poly a reach for him. S17 does have high SAT score & full rigor points and lot of EC hours. But I don’t think it will be enough… My calculation is his MCA is around 4250.
In his case we are waiting for results from the UC’s and I think he has a better chance. He has a bad freshman year so he has a better chance at schools that don’t use freshman grades for GPA.
@curiositycat333 - With Superscoring my daughters MCA (provided the calculation is still the same as posted) is 4400 or so - but still no determination. The SAT score of her friend and GPA would have made her very competitive, but alas, if Frosh year wasn’t counted, it would be an easier decision. As an FYI - if your S doesn’t get in, I would have him call the admissions office just to close the loop. I may be strange, but my D is going to call to close the loop and understand why she did not get in, (when we are notified), because I think it important to get the numbers on who did get in and how far away it was as a reach.
@curiositycat333 So would that mean that they need to admit seven times as many people as they want to enroll for Econ, but only 3.9 times as many for Bus Admin? That seems off with a yield rate of around 30% that I’ve seen for the Business School overall. Am I thinking about it backwards?
Son was just rejected for failing to put 8th grade math on application. Would have had a mca of 4634 if he had included the 8th grade math. Cal poly really needs to look into the application and update it. In fact on the website for Required courses is states required classes must be in GRADES 9-12…well most of these kids are taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade so get is straight cal poly… Have lots of great options, admitted for engineering at Purdue, Tulane, Marquette and waiting on the UC’s. Good luck you all and hope that someone can learn from this ridiculous petty error…
College admissions are difficult enough without tricky applications…
