Hello. I am wondering what are my chances of getting into these schools, as they really are my top choices. I have a 3.68 cumulative GPA, a 2000 on my SAT, and I have 318 service hours. I also am an active member of the band program. I’m on a Link Crew program at my school. I used to do sports, but I quit after my sophomore year. I have taken about 7 total honors/AP classes. I am going into my senior year this coming fall. Can anyone help me out in finding out what are my chances to get in? Also, if I get all A’s my first semester senior year, how much would I be able to increase my GPA? I will be taking 3 AP’s and 2 Honors classes. Thank you!
Are you majoring in engineering? If not, I can see you getting in, especially if you apply to SLO ED (I think that they offer it?).
Forgot to mention, yes I am applying for engineering. Thinking about Aeronautical, but still have my eyes open.
Are you in-state?
yes, I am in-state.
I think you need Math 2 and Physics Subject Tests (or at least they’re recommended) so if you do well on those it will help you a lot.
It really depends on your major. Mechanical, CS and Biomed at SLO had ridiculously low admittance this year. I’m pretty sure they only count sophomore and junior year grades and there is a limit to the extra points you can receive for AP classes. Look online for the formula for Cal State/UC GPA. My son’s CS adjusted GPA was 4.0 and he had a 35 ACT and he did not get into SLO for mech engineering. Unfortunately he didn’t apply to Pomona because he mistakenly thought he was a shoe-in for SLO.
Pomona yes, SLO, probably not. Your GPA is simply noncompetitive for engineering at SLO.
The 25th percentile for SAT scores for Pomona is 2070, so your SAT score is in the bottom quartile. They do require two subject tests, I believe. I know nothing about SLO.
Cal Poly SLO uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation and will cap with 8 semesters of Honors/AP/IB credit classes.
Cal Poly Pomona uses only 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation and will cap with 8 semesters of Honors/AP/IB credit classes. Senior grades are not included in the GPA calculation but will be used to maintain your provisional acceptance. Some CSU’s do ask for Mid-year senior grades to make sure you are still on track.
Here is the CSU GPA calculator: https://secure.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp
SLO would probably be a Low Reach and as competitive for Engineering as many of the UC’s.
Pomona is a solid Match.
@Hoggirl is quoting the SAT scores from Pomona College not Cal Poly Pomona.
Ack! Thank you @Gumbymom Mea culpa! I did not read carefully enough. I was kind of thinking in the back of my head that Pomona didn’t offer engineering! Lol! Thanks for correcting me. Sadly, too late to edit my error.
So, should I forget about SLO and just apply to Pomona? Or do I have a chance for SLO? (SLO is my top choice, but no reason to try if I can’t get in, right?
If SLO is your #1 choice, then apply ED. No one on CC can accurately predict your chances. Just consider it a possible Reach and go from there. You do not want to apply to just 2 schools, so having a balanced college list should include a couple Reaches, Matches and Safeties.
OP,
My son had a 2230 3.95/4.47 gpa, 730 Math II, and was waitlisted at SLO for Mechanical Engineering. They have a weird formula for calculating admissions. It was so not the right fit for my son anyways, who will be attending an Ivy League school where he will be able to explore possible majors for the first year (much better fit!). If you’re determined to apply, read about their admissions practices on the Cal Poly SLO forum here on CC.
@Gilrotic: If you would like the MCA point calculation information in regards to SLO, you can PM me. I made a copy that was posted on the SLO website last year.
