Cal Poly SLO Housing

I was accepted for software engineering for ED for class of 2020. I decided that I want to live in dorms and not the apartments. I am deciding between Santa Lucia and the towers. Also I’m hoping to get a double but I know that’s unlikely. If you have any input on housing please let me know!

I’m a big fan of the living learning communities. That would put you in Santa Lucia. It’s probably 65:35 M:F give or take though. The towers might be more gender balanced. I’m not sure how that plays out practically though since you tend to be closest with the people in your wing. There are typically two girls wings and four boys wings. Congrats!

@shelma, don’t forget to post your Status/MCA/Major in the “2015-2016 ED STATUS, MCA and MAJOR” thread - see the “Confused about MCA score” thread (post #52) if you need instructions to calculate your MCA!

Also, since you’re considering the “red bricks” or the “towers”, here’s some more information on both:

The Living Learning Program for the College of Engineering includes Santa Lucia, as well as North Mountain. Santa Lucia (which is one of the six “red bricks” dorms) is a traditional style dorm with long hallways and shared restrooms, while North Mountain consists of five 2-story buildings with doors that open to the outside where there is a large grassy lawn area. North Mountain houses all students in triples, but the rooms are slightly larger than those in Santa Lucia (where students are primarily housed in triples, although a limited number of doubles are typically available). North mountain does not have their own common room/study lounge, but has access to Santa Lucia for those amenities. The Living Learning Program is designed for students who want to live with others in their same College.

The “towers” refers to Sierra Madre and Yosemite, where the Connections Learning Community is housed. The Connections Learning Community is designed for students with similar interests to interact and live together. Some of the themes this year include (but I understand they change year-to-year): Academic Community Emphasis, Substance Free, Cooking & Cuisine, Eco Tower, Leadership, Mustang Way Athletics, Global Cultures & Issues, Gaming & Technology, Pre-Med & Pre-Health Careers, Music, SLO Discovery, Social Justice & Inclusion and Creative & Performing Arts. The Connections Learning Community is designed for students who want to explore new interests or immerse themselves in one of their passions outside the classroom - as well as meet/live with students who are not solely in the same college.

There are also other housing options for freshmen - including Cerro Vista, which is apartment style living.

It is my understanding that students rank their preferences for housing when signing up for housing, and that it is first come, first served. So, make sure you have a priority list and remember that most students are happy with their living arrangement, even if they didn’t get their first choice! Good luck!

Recommend getting your application in as early as possible in January if you are selective about which dorm and if you want a double. My student is in Yosemite this year in a double and there are quite a few doubles in his tower. He applied first week of housing apps. good luck.

Thanks for your replies! Also, does anyone know the best way to find a roommate through Facebook? I haven’t found a cal poly SLO class of 2020 roommate page yet

Let me know if there is a guy looking for an athletic Christian roommate. I am going in under business. Merry Christmas!

Let me clarify my son is going in under business. He likes working out and loved visiting the rec center and sees a bright future in there!

Cal poly has a strong Campus Crusade (Cru) for anyone who is wondering or interested.
